Luxury or "very nice" resorts on the beach in Maine?

I have never been to Maine and thinking of going this month for a few days with my DH and DD (4) for my birthday. I hear the White Barn INn is lovely, but i can't tell if it's ON the beach? Any suggestions for other luxury or very nice resort on the water in Maine?TIA!

White Barn Inn is not on the beach if you mean walk out your door or see the ocean from your rooms. For lack of a better description, it's on a side road toward the beach, maybe a quarter of a mile or so away.

Other places in Kennebunkport that are more on the beach are the Colony Hotel, Nonantum Resort, Breakwater.
The water they face is where the ocean and river meet. from the Colony property, you can see the water, but you have to cross the street to the tiny "Colony Beach" which doesn't have much sand, mostly some rocks. Nonantum and Breakwater are like luxury motels, and they are on the river.

I think most of the places in the Kennebunkport and Goose Rocks area (nice sandy beach slightly north of Kennebunkport)are on the beach are private houses and cottages that may be available for weekly rentals.

I've driven past this place south of Ogubquit and the scenery is amazing. I've never stayed there so can't comment on facilities, though

Hope this helps.

The Cliff House is very nice, the view is amazing and they have a great spa but I don't know if I'd consider it luxury. And, although it's on the water, it's not on a beach so you'd have to drive to one. Since Maine has a rocky coastline, there aren't really too many resorts directly on the beach.

Thank you both for your posts. They were very helpful!

Take a look at the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth. Very luxurious, close to Portland, ferry trips on Casco Bay, shopping in Freeport, next to the Portland Headlight and Fort Williams Park. As I said...very luxurious.

Inn by the Sea is one of the few "resorts" that is actually by the beach. However there are no resorts that are really "ON" the beach as you'd find in , say, Florida.

Stage Neck Inn is very nice but is rocky coastline not beach.
You also might consider Wentworth by the Sea in New Hampshire.

The busy season in Maine is just July August and September for the most part, so you aren't going to find many "resorts" in the true sense of the word. You might be setting yourself up for disappointment if you are looking for a Ritz-Carlton type of place on a Maine beach.

I'm not looking for Ritz carlton- I'm just looking for something very nice- something like the Wequasset on the Cape or Castle Hill in newport.

I have to say the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport is my favorite. However, I don't think I would call the coast of Maine the "beach."

The Samoset Resort in Rockport is probably the closest thing in Maine to the Wequassett.
