Luxury hotel in Charleston

For my husband's 70th birthday I'd like to take him for a luxurious stay and weekend in beautiful Charleston. Does anyone have suggestions as to which, the Planters Inn, Spectator Hotel, or Harbourview Inn, would be the better indulgence? Any other recommendations? We'd prefer a hotel to a B&B and want a central location so we don't have to rent a car.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Planters Inn. Great location on Market Street in the heart of downtown Charleston, very comfortable and spacious rooms, quiet (they have insulated windows which keep out any street noise), wonderful staff, good food on premises and within walking distance of a dozen or more restaurants in various price ranges.

I would choose the Belmond Charleston Place, or the Planters Inn. Both very central and both excellent.

The Belmond is lovely!

I was wondering if Planters Inn might be noisy so it was good to hear that insulated windows keep it quiet in the rooms of the hotel. The Belmond is situated in a central locale as well but there were a few not so good reviews on Trip Advisor. I'm sure either hotel would be lovely. Thanks for all your input.

I live in Charleston and when we have a special guest wanting a special luxury hotel in a great location we use French Quarter Inn. You won't be sorry. It is actually next to the Spectator which is new and untested but I am sure the Spectator is wonderful too. French Quarter is elegant and understated. Planters Inn is mostly known locally for their restaurant. I have been in the lobby of the Harborview but I have never known a local person to recommend it. I hope that helps!

Although not familiar with the places mentioned above, we had a wonderful stay at The Mills House. Our room was luxurious and the public spaces were beautiful. It is on the edge of the historic district and much of what you want to see is in walking distance. Wherever you pick, you are sure to enjoy Charleson.

I love the Planters Inn. It's my favorite in Charleston.

Wentworth Mansion. It is wonderful.

Our kids spent a significant anniversary at Wentworth House. And I know OP said not a B&B but would those in the know consider Two Meeting Street a real "cut above" for a special occasion.
Don't forget to eat at Wentworth for a memorable meal, according to DS also.

What about The Ansonborough Inn? It's not in the heart of everything but it's a fabulous place to stay!
