Luxor upgrades?
What is the best way to get an upgrade and how far in advance should it be done. I've seen something about a 20$ upgrade, how do you get one of these.
|
Unless you are a known player at the hotel's casino, and in the absence of a special promo, there is no way I'm aware of to get an upgrade 'in advance'.

For most guests, upgrades are given at check-in.
Understand that the desk attendants are deluged with requests for upgrades every day they work, so they can get quite immune to these requests. Everyone wants something for nothing in Las Vegas.

Upgraded to what? Another hotel?
|
I mean, of course an upgrade to better room. I have booked with a UK travel company and they can only offer a basic room. I believe they have larger rooms and suites in this hotel, and am prepared to pay extra for this. I know from experience elsewhere in the world it is possible to contact the hotel direct to get this and I was merely wondering if this is done in the US also. This does not necessarily mean getting 'something for nothing'

No offense intended Britabroad.
But you'll find a different type of tourist in LV than in most parts of the world. I won't elaborate except to say that a good friend who is a desk clerk at one of the best hotels in town gets pretty irritated at the lack of class and the brazen attempts by some to cajole or intimidate the clerks into free this and free that. It can only be worse at the cheaper hotels.
The average tourist in LV is not necessarily something of which America should be proud.

Some hotels will let you book suites online in advance.
All hotels will give you a better room in advance if you are willing to pay for it.
Try calling the toll-free # or checking online to see what's available.
Thanks for the advice Kyle. I'll try the options you suggested. Any ideas on the best restaurants to try. We love all types of food but are especially fond of a good steak. Also is it better to hire a car or go by cab, is there public transport? Is it safe to walk at night to the other hotels on the strip?
|
The main strip area (everything south of the Stratosphere) is extremely safe.
Even at pretty late hours. Partly because the walkways are quite crowded with tourists until late, and the city itself is VERY motivated to keep crime against tourists to a minimum so as not to hurt business. Plenty of security/police around.

Hire a car only if you'll be doing a lot of hopping from one end of the strip to the other.
You simply can't appreciate how big the casino properties are until you visit and try walking from the tiered parking decks into the casino then back out. Some of these places are simply gargantuan....>500 meters from front sidewalk into casino and out to parking deck in the larger ones. And with all the people it's not always a quick walk.
Cabs are the easiest way to make long moves down the strip. Most people simply hop along from one hotel to the next until they get tired, then cab back to home base or walk and burn off some calories.

Best steaks: Prime--Bellagio
Smith and Wollensky
Drai's--Barbary Coast (don't let the upstairs casino fool you, one of the 5 highest rated restaurants in LV by Zagat readers)
Lawry's
Ruth's Chris off the strip on Flamingo and on Paradise Rd
Delmonico--Venetian

Best views: Top of the World restaurant at Stratosphere (a very forgettable hotel with a 1000 foot high restaurant)
Eiffel Tower restaurant
Bellagio restaurants with window seats facing their fountains on simulated Lake Como.
Best wishes for a great trip...

Thanks again Kyle, we'll try your suggestions. We're really looking forward to our holiday and feel far more reassured after your comments about the safety of the strip. It sounds as though we'll be needing a stout pair of hiking boots. Must remember to pack the corn plasters!
Regards Britabroad

I was doing some research myself for an upcoming trip to Vegas and though I cannot attest to their quality myself, I saw tips for the following two steakhouses:

Yukon Grill (trendy steakhouse) 740 S. Decatur Blvd.

AJs Steakhouse at the Hard Rock 4455 Paradise Road

Have fun!
