Lunch near 254 west 54th st.

Seeing Cabaret with friends on Wednesday.
Any recommendations? 3 women, rather have a fairly casual, simple sit-down lunch. One person vising from Texas, so probably not Tex-Mex, all other options are OK, I believe.

254 West 54th St is between Broadway & 8th Av.

There are many options but I'll suggest just 2:

AppleBee's - 7th Av & West 50th St

Ellen's Stardust Diner - 1650 Broadway at West 51st St (the outside looks like a subway car but it is a full regular restaurant inside with a 1950's "flavor" (there is even an old style lunch counter to sit at if you don't want a table).

Thanks, but no chains I can get anywhere, and no kitsch.

Applebees and Ellen's Stardust Diner? Did I miss that the poster and her friends are like 14 years old?

Serafina for modern Italian?
Matt's Cafe for food standard American?
Uncle Vanya (Russian)

Giving us a budget and type of food might help. There are many options.

That's Matt's Grill, not Cafe.

Thanks, Neo, I was just going to ask if it was grill. All 3 sound like possibilities to me. I'll eventually run a few choices by the others, who get to NYC less than I do.

Tisserie 55 in the Park Central Hotel. www.tisserie.com

Brasserie Cognac
1740 Broadway (55 & 56 Sts)

They take reservations and have something for everybody. Enjoy!

We've recently liked Pongrsi Thai, Thalia, El Centro, Kashaval Gardens, and Afghan Kebab House.

Thanks all, I'll have a look at all these choices!

Ellen's stardust is great for kids - you go for the show - the food is basic diner fare. Applebees????

If you want something theatrical for out of towners you might do the Bar at 21. Or something like the Rock Center Cafe.

If you like Italian, especially pasta, Bocca di Bacco on 9th Ave between 55 and 54 is good. Better than the one on 45th.
