Lunch in Theatre district - pre-matinee
 

We are going to see the matinee of Spamalot later this month and are trying to source a nice restaurant in the theatre district where we can enjoy a light lunch before the 2:00 show. Something stylish with good food. Delis are great, but the food is so big. Any suggestions?

Well John''s Pizza is right across the street . They have great pizza and also some good Italian dishes. It used to be an old church many years ago and was converted to a restaurant. Carmines also is across the street......great Italian food family style but if you think the deli food is big.......

I would highly recommend Becco's Italian Restaurant on W. 46th between 8th and 9th - an easy walk from the theatre district and amazing food - we just went there for the first time on Sunday and I can't wait to go back. I know there is a website but am unsure what it is.

I love John's Pizza- I work nearby and go there for lunch every so often. The pizza is thin-crust, so it feels lighter. You can get salads, etc. as well.

I work on 45th street (between 6th & 7th) & there is a good Italian Restaurant there called Tratorria Trecolori. Also next door to Carmines is Ollies Noodle House if you like Chinese food.

Foley's fish house has really good food and a wonderful view of Times square.

Check out some of the Brazillian restaruants on 46th St. There are several between 7th and 6th Ave.
REasonable prices, comfortable, seafood, chicken or beef done a bit differently, but not so much that most people wouldn't enjoy it.

How about The Firebird....taking up the banner for the Russian Tea Room, I think this gorgeous restaurant would be a lovely place for lunch. Russian food is delicious and elegant and not heavy.

My other suggestion is at Rockefeller Center. Might as well take in the fabulous Rock. Morrells Wine Bar has light fare and a little glass of champagne could start a memorable afternoon.

I make it a practice to avoid heavy carb lunches before a concert or theatre. After the theatre maybe, before, No. LMF

I forgot another great one: Bar Americain. 52nd I think. Bobby Flay place. Excellent food and atmosphere. Very American and lots of lighter things to choose from. LMF

Algonquin or Sardi's? Stylish would fit them-can anyone help about the good food part?

Grab a slice or that great plate of salad with breaded chicken at Luigi's. A small Italian frequented by locals in the corner of 53rd and 8th.

Oh, please, not Sardi's. No matter how stylsih you may think it is, that doesn't make up for the low quality of the food!
I'd recommend the Garden Room in Le Madeleine on Weset 43rd Street.

st.andrews pub on 44th. great salads and lighter fare or full meals.

Danny's on 46th between 8th and 9th has a great prix fixe lunch menu for $12.95. The food was great too and beautifully prepared.

HowardR, Sorry to hear food is bad at Sardi's. I was only making a suggestion based upon years of hearing about it as an "in" pre- and post-theatre destination. DH and I stopped there for drinks and found it to have a great ambience and the people were very very nice to us. We didn't eat there but it is a very nice-looking place. I'll stand by stylish for that place.
