I was raised in northern San Gabriel from 1948 to 1971 and rode my bike to the Huntington Library quite frequently - looking for mischief. I don't think it cost anything to enter the grounds back then. We returned for a visit in 2014, and spent a day at the Library & gardens. Wow - it has changed quite a bit since the early 60s.
I lived near the Newport Pier area just after college, and frequented the Crab Cooker in the early 70s - probably ran into Tabermash2 there. My wife & I moved to San Francisco in 1975. The main reason we did so was to get away from all the freeways, traffic congestion, and constantly having to drive hours to visit many places we wanted to visit. I suggest that you just stick around the Huntington Library/Pasadena area, stay off the freeways, and visit: - The Gamble House http://gamblehouse.org/ Pick up a walking tour of Greene & Greene houses at the bookstore - The Langham Huntington Hotel (where I took swimming lessons as a kid & where we had our wedding reception) - The neighborhood of exclusive homes around the Huntington hotel. Many famous Green & Green designed Craftsman style homes. Drive past the Blacker House in the Oak Knoll neighborhood. - The Wrigley Mansion https://www.tournamentofroses.com/hi...urnament-house - Old Pasadena. Including Castle Green 99 S Raymond Ave. - Pasadena Museum of History open 12-5 Tour of the Fenyes Mansion Fri & Sat at 12:15 - Bungalow Heaven neighborhood of 800 small craftsman homes built in the early 1900s. We dined at Racion in Old Pasadena and had a fabulous meal. Stu Dudley |

Stu, I probably saw you there and maybe at the old Huntington Hotel. Used to toss the frisbee there. Might have been kicked out once or twice as a youth. Gamble House is a great idea. Tours, but they don't let you take interior photos (spoil sports). http://travelswithmaitaitom.com/the-...ouse-pasadena/ Don't know when you'll be here. Bungalow Heaven has a house tour in April. I wrote this for last year's tour. This year it will be on Sunday, April 30. http://travelswithmaitaitom.com/home...tour-pasadena/ 110 freeway to downtown will be a snap (if no accident) on the weekend. You can take the Gold Line from Pasadena to Union Station. Oh, one place I forgot. I really don't like going to Hollywood, but The Musso & Frank Grill is an historic restaurant that can be fun. I don't find the food all that great and haven't been for years, but I hear the waiters are still grumpy and the martinis strong. You can take the Gold Line to Red Line and walk to restaurant, but as you'll see below, with L.A. "rapid" transit, it might be easier to drive. http://travelswithmaitaitom.com/the-...-hollywood-ca/ ((H)) |
Yes, Musso & Frank is still the same.
It's an interesting place, with its history and the formal waiters. The menu isn't really appealing, to us anyway. |

My wife must have taken 200 pictures of homes in Bunglow Heaven. She just left for her exercise class & I'm sure that when she returns, she'll want to visit Bunglow Heaven in April after looking at your blog. Stu Dudley |
Stu, if you do, send me a message. Breakfast is on me for all the travel info I've gotten from you.

"I'd rather enjoy a restaurant." I know what you mean...me too! Trying to keep the price down though...I ate a bit too well in Europe, lol. If I left it up to my friend, we'd eat entirely meat and fried food and I'd lose my mind before we reach Santa Fe. Veggies, they're necessary, I keep telling her.
Thanks again! Manuela looks right up my alley:) and thanks so much for the house tour recs- I knew there was something I was forgetting. Really wanted to see Gamble house last time! It's in July, but I'll add Bungalow Heaven to my future trips list- I love LA, and I'm always wanting to go back there. |
mm, I think food trucks are hot in LA.
https://www.google.com/amp/observer....?client=safari Danny Trejos is an actor you'd probably recognize. We ate at his cafe and loved the street tacos. |
Tacos! Yes! Thanks, tabernash2- my favorite kind of food truck:)
