Lunch in Mission District San Francisco?
Headed to the Mission with a friend tomorrow and looking for a place for lunch. We were considering Delfina for pizza, but it's closed for lunch on Monday. We'd appreciate your recommendation for good food around Valencia or Guerrero. No Mexican cuisine this time, please.

We had a lovely meal at Samovar:

Casual - Giordano Bros, Pittsburgh all in one sandwiches and great beer.
Luna Park - fancy casual American if that makes sense. Great desserts OSHA Thai - a chain but a small one Esperpento - not Mexican but Spanish tapas, excellent |
Tomorrow is Sunday--many places will be open for lunch or brunch (Foreign Cinema and Dosa, the latter for South Indian food, are two of my favorites).
If you do mean Monday, you can get a good pizza at Little Star, 400 Valencia at 15th Street. They specialize in deep dish, but I get their thin crust and always enjoy it. I would choose Delfina over Little Star if both were open, but it's a good option. For a light lunch, you might join the line for Tartine (always seems to have a line out the door!), 600 Guerrero (at 18th). They specialize in bread and bakery items, and their sandwiches are really good. There are plenty of new spots popping up all the time in that neighborhood--it's hard to keep up with them! |
Oopsie. We'll be there Monday, not tomorrow. Thanks aprillilacs. I love Tartine, so we may go there unless someone posts another suggestion. Tapas also sound good. Good choices abound. We'll hit the Cut Loose outlet and Buffalo Exchange first.

My new favorite is Lolo's. I know you said. Not Mexican", but since this is Mexican-inspired, not your typical Mission burritos and enchiladas, I thought I'd throw it out there. Served tapas style.

Follow lunch with a salted caramel ice cream at Bi-Rite.

Bi-Rite is definitely on the list, Stu. The menu at Lolo looks amazing. Unfortunately they're not open for lunch and don't serve brunch on Mondays. :-(

tartine has crazy stupid lines ALL the time. With so many good choices don't wait for food!
Same with lines for Bi Rite ice cream if its's a nice day |

Probably not a line early afternoon on a foggy Monday. Stu Dudley |
Another suggestion - Farina Pizza. The pizza is excellent. Unfortunately, the two times we were there we were "served" (and I say that in jest) by the same lousy-in attentive waiter, so I doubt we'll go back. (And yes, I did tell the owner).

@Stududley - but school is out. Lines all the time when it's sunny.

OK - just like Bud's ice cream, which was on the same block we lived on in the Noe Valley. I was just talking with Bud about 1 hr ago. On June 6 this year, he celebrated his 100th birthday. My FIL attended the huge birthday party his daughter threw for him. When Bud was in the Army during WWII, he had an army buddy who's last name was Baskin. After the war, both went on to make ice cream for a living.

Stu, all I can say is "butter brickle" - my mouth is watering. Some day if we meet I'll tell you a story about me and Bud's circa 1973 or 1974.
|
Pick a time & place to meet - and we'll do that. We leave for 5 weeks in France in about 2 weeks from today - so shoot me an e-mail & we'll work something out in later Sept or Oct.
We're not enamored with the "improvements" to Burlingame Ave. I think they really "messed up". Stu Dudley |
PS - great Giant's game today. MadBum threw a gem - and Posey was spectacular.
