Lunar Eclipse

Just in case some are unaware, tonight starting around 10:00pm Eastern, 7:00pm Pacific, we will have a total lunar eclipse in the USA. The totality begins at 11:14 EST.
Enjoy!!

Thank you. Someone said it would rain here tonight. Hopefully that's wrong. Remember, don't look directly at the eclipse without adequate protection.

Got a laugh last night while watching the Red Sox game. The play by play guy and the color commentary (Jerry Remy) were discussing the beautiful full moon that was very visable from Fenway Park last night and segwayed into discussing the lunar eclipse. The play by play guy announces that the eclipse is caused when the SUN moves between the EARTH and the MOON and how rare an event it was. GEE - I sure hope its a rare event or we'd all be fried today. Jerry Remy was beside himself laughing. Even used the telestrator to draw diagrams.

Anyway - we'll be out tonight to watch if the weather cooperates. I'm sure Jerry and the other guy will be watching too.

During a lunar eclipse you don't need to worry about protection for your eyes.

doc_ May 15th, 2003 11:36 AM

The other guy is Don Orsillo. That was a great exchanged of words.

DeborahB May 15th, 2003 11:38 AM

Thank you for reminding me! It's supposed to rain here tonite too. Perhaps it will hold off a little while longer.

Bennie, quick, call the park or the tv station and tell those two to load up on sun block! And get ready to sizzle! Great story! Jeez, even used the illustrator! Anybody know the correct spelling of doofus? And is that a collective noun to cover the two of them? Great!!

Suzie May 15th, 2003 11:42 AM

Wow that was hilarious. I guess SPF 45 wouldn't do much good for us!

BTW it's a solar eclipse, sun is eclipsed by the moon, (a lunar eclipse is when the moon is eclipsed by the earth's shadow) that you need to have eye protection. To see this the sun must be visible to you and looking into the sun can damage your eyes.

itleyen May 15th, 2003 11:44 AM

Oh, SuzieQ, my eyes are kinda weak - are you sure? If the Fenway guys are right, it's gonna be a close brush, and the UV promises to be awsome. Deborah, you won't need a match - just hold that bad boy out and volia! We'll all be smoking. If I don't see you again, it's been real ....

DeborahB May 15th, 2003 11:51 AM

Thanks for the laugh itleyen!

Scarlett May 15th, 2003 11:55 AM

itleyen, I got it ;o)
I will be careful to not look directly at the moon, I hear being moonstruck is dangerous! And I will bring my protection in the form of the Pup, who will no doubt howl when the eclipse happens~

itleyen May 15th, 2003 12:00 PM

Thank you, Deborah. But may I amend one thing I said - my geometry was a bit off. We always need to use adequate protection, but not for lunar eclipses.

bennie May 15th, 2003 02:03 PM

That's his name! Don Orsilo - Jerry Remy recognized the mistake and spent the rest of the night goofing on Don. It was classic.

To Fodorites who don't watch the Sox - Jerry Remy is a great play by play sportscaster. Don Orsilo is, as we say in the legal world, woefully inadequate.

To Fodorites who do watch the Sox - Bring back Sean McDonough!!!!!!

Jerry and Don are at again tonight. Wally the team mascot doll is sitting in a little house covered in tinfoil to deflect the sun's rays. Wally also spent the day at the Museum of Science. The doll now knows more than Don. Jerry is worried that everyone will be toast tonight.

Scarlett May 15th, 2003 05:27 PM

So much for moon watching tonight.
We are getting a later Nor'Easter and it is windy and cloudy and the moon is hidden:(

Betsy May 15th, 2003 08:15 PM

Ooooh...just popped out to look up into the southeastern sky here in the SF Bay Area. The eclipse is beautiful. I guess it's a little hazy, because the moon is a soft red. Came back in and hunted up the binoculars, and found the sight to be even more beautiful when looking through them. Sure wish we had a telescope!

rjw_lgb_ca May 16th, 2003 06:46 AM

For the record, I watched it standing on the beach on a clear night in Long Beach CA, holding my honey in my arms. Beautiful dusky grey-red, with a little moon corona. Later, we had a beautiful full moon. Lovely sight.

arjay May 16th, 2003 06:59 AM

It was great watching on a clear nite in NE Wisconsin. I think the reddish cast was an expected thing. It was really something to go from such a brightly lit landscape to one of total darkness...with the stars popping into view as the sky darkened. I thought it was one of the most interesting and dramatic eclipses I've seen.

doc_ May 16th, 2003 07:01 AM

Bennie..Ease up on Don Orsillo,he's not that bad. McDonough does the Friday games every week. I agree he is much better than Orsillo. I remember when Remy first started,he was awful. McDonoughs radio show was just cancelled so maybe he will do more Sox games.

itleyen May 16th, 2003 07:45 AM

Somebody on the elevator said the eclipse continues tonight - but jeez, it's raining again.
