What is the procedure when going through airport security if we take our laptop and digital camera?

I believe you have to take your laptop out of the case. The laptop and the camera will not be damaged or affected by the xray equipment, which both the laptop and camera must pass.

Our last trip they had a guy directing those waiting for security to take all laptops and cameras out of bags, turn them on, put in separate small bins to go thru scanner. Then these items just took their usual ride on the conveyer belt, were retrieved by owners and repacked in carry-ons. My husband travels with laptop weekly, and usually he just leaves it in his briefcase and it rides in there thru scanner. Depends on airport, screeners, etc. But it is not a big deal.

You need to take your laptop out of its carrying case and put it in a separate bin, but you do not need to turn it on.

You need to do the same thing with a video camera.

You DO NOT need to take your regular (still) digital camera out of your bag - I have taken mine through in its bag many times and no one has ever said anything or taken it out. Your digital camera will not be damaged by the equipment. High speed film could be, however.

When I go through security now, I automatically do this:

- take everything out of my pockets, plus my watch, and put it into my coat
- zip up my coat pockets, take it off, put it on the conveyor belt.
- take off my belt and shoes and put them into a bin.
- take my laptop out of its case and put it in the bin and through the machine.

I never have any problems going through security.

In the summer of 2003 I was surprised that while I traveled with my laptop to Europe, I never had to take it out of its case. I left it totally inside its carry case on the belt and no check was made, going from NYC to London, and also coming home from Paris to Miami, as well as from London to Berlin.
