Luggage in Truck at Haleakala Summit?

Since we will be getting to Maui early in the morning and want to avoid wasting time taking our luggage to the hotel (4S) before exploring - is it fairly safe to leave our luggage in the car at the Haleakala summit while we look around - probably between noon and one? Then head to Mama's for lunch? Others have already advised that we should leave our luggage if we tour around the northwest shore because it is remote.

Nancy, just take the damn luggage to the Four Seasons and get it over with !!!

Uhhhh Rusty, Please - take a chill pill. Too bad I stress you out so much. My question WAS........... is the summet at Haleakala Summit fairly safe because it is in a busy parking lot? I do NOT want to drive to 4S, get out, get someone to store our luggage and get back in the car to turn right back around and head north IF I can feel secure about leaving the luggage in the car. The way people talk, it feels like there's a criminal behind every bush just waiting to crash the windows on every parked car. Is my car going to be broken into at every site just to SEE if I have luggage in the truck? - 'cause that's the only way they would know is to break in. Is this theft happening every 5 minutes? Maybe one of us should remain at the car everytime we stop somewhere.

I think your luggage will be fine. In fact, the most police presence we saw in Maui was the Park Rangers doing traffic stops on the road to and from the summit. I think you will find like minded tourists there and not much interest in your rental car.

nancy,
you will be ok at the summitt. but never leave anything in your car at the public beach lots.

The lots at the summit are pretty big and busy, so I don't think you'll have any problem there. Unless you are planning to hike out Sliding Sands trail for a few hours (which it doesn't sound like you will be doing), you probably won't be all that far away from your car.

BTW, I thought the view from the Leleiwi lookout (a few minutes before you get to the visitor center) was well worth the stop. You will have to leave your car in a smaller lot and hike about 15 minutes RT.
