Lucas, Hunter & Sylvan Grove, KS

We're going to this area for a family reunion. We are going to go to the Garden of Eden in Lucas.

We will need to spend the night somewhere in this area. DH says we have Marriott points. (just kidding) Any ideas where to stay? Are any of these places big enough for a motel?

Keith, are you out there?

Hi Bonnie. I was out in Kansas dodging tornados and thunderstorms. It was a little eerie listening to the national radio broadcasts about the tornados that hit the state on Friday and Saturday, but having the broadcast interrupted so the local station could announce other tornados coming through.

Lucas has lodging options, but they are very limited and I haven't visited them. The restaurant situation in Lucas is also slim.

I can recommend the historic Midland Hotel in Wilson (Czech Capital of Kansas) just a little south of those communities. Although I haven't stayed there, I have eaten in the restaurant and walked through one of the rooms. The hotel was the setting for some of the scenes in the movie "Paper Moon." http://www.midland-hotel.com/

There are two other places in Wilson which I haven't visited: a B&B http://www.dasborellhaus.com/ and the Sportsmen's Lodge http://www.sportsmenslodge.net/

I revisited the Bunker Hill Cafe, about 15 miles west, just Thursday night. I recommend going over there for steak and fresh breads, some evening during your visit: http://www.kansastravel.org/bunkerhillcafe.htm

To use your Marriott points you will need to go to Salina, about 50 miles east on I-70.

Thank you Keith. I knew you'd come through. Sounds like Wilson might be the place to stay. I was hoping for something different. If we stay there I'll have to rent Paper Moon first.

I forgot to ask about golf courses. I'll try Google.

The weather is definitely wild right now. My home town has parts of it being evacuated and my parents house is partially flooded.

But compared to Greensboro, we can't complain.

Denise :-)

Good thing I didn't send you farther south to Great Bend. You would have to rent In Cold Blood, and that would be a whole different thing:-)

There are 9 hole courses in Lincoln, Russell and Ellsworth. I think the nearest 18 hole courses are in Hays and Salina.

We did go and stay at the Midland Hotel in Wilson. It was interesting...

We watched Paper Moon before hand. I saw that awhile back the Clutter place (In Cold Blood) was for sale.
