Luau on Kauai

Are their any recommendations for an authentic luau.
Many of them seem very touristy.

The Hanalei Colony Resort(incredible setting) - four miles or so beyond Hanalei - is supposed to have a good/authentic Luau - and it's right by the beach.

Stayed there waaay back when for our Honeymoon - but don't think they had a Luau back then. The restaurant was called Charo's then - but it's changed to Mediterrean Gourmet or some such (well regarded) - and think their Luau is on Tuesday.

Haven't been, but Smith's is family run and has been in business for ages, they have beautiful gardens to tour (have seen the gardens) also.

Smith's is who I see often recommended for Kauai (I've never been to that island). but I think any commercial luau will be somewhat "touristy" by nature, unless you can get invited to a private family party, happen to find one being put on by a church, or something like that.

Check the reviews on the Luau at the Hanaley Bay resort - which most people don't get up to. Very good reviews and impossible to beat the setting.

Tomsd - Think you are confusing HBR with Hanalei Colony Resort as HBR has no restaurant at present due to a fire. Hanalei Colony Resort is where the Med Gourmet restaurant is which has the luau mentioned in Post #1.
