Luau in Kauai
 

Our adult son is joining us for a week in Kauai. It is his first trip to Hawaii and he may want to go to a luau. Can anyone recommend one in Kaui?
Also, what do you think about the Fern Grotto? We have not been to Kauai since Iniki and I have no idea what is still there. Is it necessary to get there by the boat trip or can we drive to it?

No, Janin, you cannot drive to Kauai.:) You also cannot drive to Fern Grotto. A boat trip from Wailua Marina is about $20 per person. I haven't done a luau on Kauai yet but I have been told that Smith's Tropical Paradise Luau is very good, as luaus go. I have it booked for the end of May. NOW, if only the rain will stop before then.((D))8-)

My family have really enjoyed the Princeville luau
over the past 6 years. The food is always good (although the desserts are a bit lacking, imo) and the show is great!

Oh jamaltay you make me blush. Did not make myself clear or you would have realized I meant I did not know what was left of Fern Grotto after Iniki and wanted to know if we could drive to the grotto while we are in Kauai. :) We have our inter-island plane tickets already.

Smiths Tropical Paradise Luau is very nice. The food is delicious, the grounds around the luau are gorgeous, and the show is exciting. The tour of the Fern Grotto was not that exciting. The boat ride to the grotto was ok but the actual fern grotto area was under construction when we went last August. There were orange cones and tape all over the place. Maybe its finished by now. Even if it is finished I wouldnt do it again.

Thanks for the replies. We are so looking forward to this trip. Our son asked about "the Queen's bathtub." Some kind of pool. Anyone know what and where that is? I have not heard of it before.

it's the queen's bath..and it is the ocean, not a manmade pool. You can read up on this lovely lava shelf area in Princeville in most guidebooks. The swimming here is very dependent upon tides, weather and surf conditions. Often it is pretty sketchy..other times it's a dream. You hike down a path in Princeville to this rocky shore. It's beautiful..indeed, but not level footing in many places, if this is a concern.
