Luau & Pork

Hello,

I have a strict diet. I was wondering if there is anything for a vegertarian to eat at a Luau.

And does anyone know of any good vegeratian(seafood) restuarants in Maui?

Thanks,
Janice

It's usually a big buffet, with lots of veggies, prepared in unique ways, and taro, of course. Bread, desserts, drinks, I don't eat meat and was satisfied at the Luau we went to. (Marriott Maui.)

There are usually some veggies, plus white rice, mac salad, poi (blech), some desserts, and green salad. There is enough to eat, although you may feel that you've over paid for your meal. The main dishes include pork, fish, chicken, etc. If you are vegan you'll pretty much be stuck with iceberg salad, assuming that the salad dressing doesn't contain dairy or some other animal product. If you eat seafood then you'll do fine - as fish is pretty standard at luaus.

If you're Vegan, you'll probably like Poi
(I said Taro before, but I think that's the root that's the root that Poi is made from). I loved it!

Thanks for the replies.... :) whats poi?

Melissa Sep 4th, 2002 01:17 PM

Poi is made from taro root, and it is good for you! And good if you have aquired the taste. Otherwise you can try poi-based products at www.thepoicompany.com

Best way I can describe poi is a cross between cream of wheat and mashed potatoes!

Oh, and as to your seafood restaurant question, you'll find several, don't worry. I liked I'O's, which is also part of Pacificos, a very big seafood place. Most romantic setting at I'O's. Search for Pacificos, and you'll find their info.

if you are veggie try to make mashed taro root. Had some at Roy's New York on Sunday chef said it had heavy cream, salt and pepper. BETTER THAN ANY MASHED POTATOES I EVER HAD. Poi is good with lomi salmon or lau lau but I think it is an aquired taste for most, mashed taro with S&P, hot is for everyone.

I think you would also love steamed taro leaves, only thing is it takes 1-2 hours to steam, it is a chore but better than spinach. Undercooked taro leaves are toxic, so don't eat raw or undercooked.

Yes!! in another post, "your favorite food you can't get at home" I posted Taro quesadillas, the leaves are great!

well maybe toxic is a strong description for the undercooked taro leaves, you will get sick though. Releases a liquid that is highly highly acidic and burns inner tissues of eater.

Oh Marti would love it if you topped that post. UGH!!!! where can I find taro leaves in NYC. There are taro roots in chinatown but I don't think they have the leaves. Up the recipe though please, I will go a hunting for the leaves.

mashed taro tastes like a nutty mash potatoes. So imagine mashed potatoes with full flavor.
