Lower Coastal Maine travel help
My husband and I will be drivng over to the Maine coast from the lake region of NH on Sat. Oct 16th. We will have most of Sat. and Sun. to explore until we catch an evening flight back to Ga. from Manchester. We would like to spend Sat. night in a nice little waterfront inn and we would like to see a lighthouse, eat good lobster and maybe take a short bay cruise. I was thinking that we probably would not need to go any farther north than Portland. Can anyone give us some suggestions?

Bar Harbor.

Kennebunkport probably has more true "waterfront inn" choices than Ogunquit, and lots of dining choices still open after Columbus Day. On SUnday you could head to Ogunquit for breakfast, then take the back shore road down through Cape Neddick, York, and onward through Kittery. From Kittery you hook up with 95 South to 101 Manchester. From Kittery to Manchester you'll want to allow about an hour drive time.
|
PS....by back shore road I mean the actual road called "Shore Road" that you will see in Ogunquit and then continuing down along hugging the shore all the way. Not "Route 1" coastal route which is really more of a two-lane speedway down the coast, with no real views to speak of.

Thanks so much. I'll start looking for something in that area. Does anyone have a recommendation of a waterfront inn in Kennebunkport?

I hope someone will give you the most scenic driving route between NH and Kennebunkport.

Thanks for the lodging recommendations. We would love to get a scenic driving route from Meredith, NH to Kennebunkport, if anyone could share one.

From Meredith I would probably ask the locals for the quickest route over to Wolfeboro across the lake, then hook up with Route 109 all the way to Kennebunk. You'll hit some lovely lake area up around Sanbornville and Shapleigh, stop at Ted's Fried Clams in Acton, and then head to Kennebunk via Sanford, stopping just outside Sanford at Shain's ice Cream which will hold you nicely til you get to Kennebunk, you'll take I think route 35 down to Kennebunkport.
