Low-key recs for NYC
I am headed to NYC this weekend where, if you have been watching the news, will realize there is a nor'easter with 12 inches of snow coming. I am going to see some of Americana Week, which under the best of circumstances, is exhausting.
I have some tickets to concerts in the evenings but would like something utterly relaxing in my back pocket. Usually I would sit on a bench in Central Park and decompress, but in light of the weather, don't see this, or walking around as I am wont to do, realistic. Does anyone have any recommendations for something that would whittle away a couple of hours that is somewhat decadent and relaxing as the snow swirls around me? |
What is Americana Week?
Decadent and relaxing? A porn show with chaise lounge? |
When specifically? Where are you starting from? Speaking for snow day, I will be at Museum of the City of NY watching a doc about Fred Lebow but current exhibits there are fabulous.
Early evening I will be seeing a film about Jack Cole at MOMA. A Guide Named Sue |
How about a window seat at the Lobby Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental, from which you will watch the snow fall on Central Park? It's a fair hike from Sotheby's, though.

Weirdly difficult question! NYC has it all, but I tend to think of it as more bustling than relaxing.
If I had a bad weather day to kill, I'd luxuriate in a museum. The Met is an obvious choice. Me, I'd go to the Neue Gallerie and relax in its Cafe Sabarsky. http://www.neuegalerie.org |
If by "porn show" you mean Dita will be in town, yes indeed, I would go see that in a heart beat.
Sothebys is far from everything. I'm only going to spend a few hours in the morning there, I think. I had lunch at the Lobby Lounge once and it was fantastic. Speaking of which, it's restaurant week and I would like to experience that, too. |
If you haven't seen the new Star Wars movie, see it at the Ziegfeld before they close the theater.
|
I just hope you actually get to NY. The last time a storm like this happened, we were stuck half way (in Detroit) for the whole weekend. NY airports were all closed to incoming traffic.
If you are making a connection, I urge you to make a cancelable hotel reservation (just in case)in your connecting city. Thankfully we did that before departing Minneapolis. We had a "lovely" weekend in the Westin DTW Airport. Much better than thousands of other stranded travelers who were sleeping on the floor in the airport. Good Luck! |
They're closing our favorite theatre?????????????????? Why, NOOOOOO, Whyyyyyy????????
|
"They're closing our favorite theatre?"
Yeah, it's a shame. It appears that a single, large screen just can't compete in today's movie market. I remember seeing "Lawrence of Arabia" there, twice (!) during its various revivals. The theater truly did the movie justice. |
Dita Von Teese is no "porn show"--whatever that is, lol. They still make those?
|
We've travelled from Boston as the Ziegfeld being our destination more then once! What a loss!
|
The Public Library is a good way to spend a couple of hours.

|
I have no idea what this entire topic is about.
|
Hollywood should have saved it!
A historical montage. . . http://www.ew.com/gallery/ziegfeld-t...-through-years |
I would head over to Lincoln Plaza Cinema to see Son of Saul.
However, the BEST movie out right now to watch during a blizzard is H8ful 8 by Quentin Tarantino. Thin |
Hateful 8 in 70 mm was utterly gorgeous.
