Loved the little towns in the NE but cant move so far away. Wish I knew of places kind of like them in the west. Any suggestions???

Loved the little towns in the NE but cant move so far away. Wish I knew of places kind of like them in the west. Any suggestions???
I am looking for a safe town in the high desert with some nightlife (as in little spots for locals) and the arts. Santa Fe is to expensive and Taos I loved but am worried there is not much for my teen to do there. Casino and a lot of drinking? Am I right on this? So I was thinking sw CO? Any suggestions???

Just curious, what does your teen like to do now? Anywhere you go in that area would have lots of outdoor activities, certainly not just the casino and lots of drinking.
I don't think there'd be a huge difference in nightlife in SW CO vs. northern NM.

When you mention small NE towns, I think some of the places in Oregon and Washington come a close 2nd (without the severe winters).
Places like Corvallis or Eugene, Oregon. And outlying areas around Seattle such as North Bend or Duvall, for example.

Having lived in NE, and NM and now in SW Colorado, if you can provide a bit more in the way of what you and your teen require, I might be able to give you some suggestions.

I just got the relocation guide for prescott and Pueblo. I swear Pueblo looks like it should only be about a hr and 1/2 from Taos, its actually quite a drive and Santa Fe is Longerrrr. Hmmmm is it just me or is there a lack of major highways coming out of Durango?

I really like Ft. Collins. It's a great downtown and college area.
I am not familiar with Grand Junction at all.
Taos is cool. But, I have no idea what you would do there.
Skiing if it snows. Rafting if the water is high enough.

There are no major highways coming out of Durango. It is 3 hours to I 25 in ABQ and not sure how long to I 25 in Colorado. Grand Junction is about 3.5 hours from Durango. We are really set apart here.
Grand Junction is a nice little city with a college and some interesting cultural activities such as musical events and so on. There is a lot to do outdoors. There is shopping and the temps are pretty good there. It is not high desert as they are at 4500 ft so it is warmer in summer and milder in winter. It is 4 hours from Denver I think. We were there and to us, it seemed like a big city!
The housing is high, I was surprised at the prices of homes.
Durango is nice, but way smaller and way more expensive.

actually I think everybody gets ticked off when suburban sprawl happens and ruins the beauty of an area. I know where I live I don't like new housing developments. my family has been here since the early 1920s. Back even in the 1970s this was considered the sticks.

rb, I've recommended Prescott a couple of times on posts like these but it doesn't generate much interest. My brother lives there and I really like it. It has a nice town square, a small museum, some bars, restaurants, & coffee shops. It's only about 90 minutes to the airport in Phoenix, and it's quite beautifully set in the mountains. I think I might move there!

I don't remember there being a big casino in Taos, though I think there is a little one near the pueblo. As for drinking, that happens in big and small towns all over the US.
What are you looking for, exactly? What are your and your teen's interests?

i like the history and the different cultures. My parents were on their way down to CA. and are going to stop at Prescott now and Flagstaff. Look around Im hoping they will make it to Durango but they only about 4 or 5 days. Any suggestions on hotels or must see's in Prescott and FS? I am only worried about Phoenix being so close ... its a rough city, I would think the spread out to Prescot would be coming. I love the archeology to the area though. My daughter likes dance and sports ... arts and of course everything else teens like.
