"Love Bugs"
In 1999, we visited Gulf Shores, but were driven away by "love bugs". They covered everything. We had to drive with our wipers on. Someone said they come every year. Does anyone know if this is true and if so, when? Thinking of going back this September.

You should live in our area and put up with the Japanese lady bugs the US government imported to kill some sort of smaller bug. In October they are everywhere and they can get into your house and you have no idea how. We live in a house that is only five years old and we fight these damn bugs for months until cold weather puts them into hibernation. I want my state senator to come to my house everyday and suck these stinking, and they do stink, bugs up twice a day. What a nightmare!

These Japanese lady bugs have wiped out our native lady bugs. Come on Senator, do I have a stinking job for you.
|
Should have gotten my thought together before writing this post. I would allow the good Senator to use the vacuum to suck up the bugs......but hearing some of the things out of his mouth, maybe we could just hold his feet and let him go to town.

yes, lovebugs traditionally come out in May and September.

If you are driving your own car, you will want to wash them off. Do not leave the dead bugs on your car until you get back home. They will discolor your paint.

Nobugs: From what I understand the lady bugs were released enmasse to combat the Japanese beetle which was destroying the pinetree population. Well thanks to the government that was to late because thousands and thousands of acres are already destroyed. Here in western NC were I live I have 42 dead pines on my property alone (2.5 acres), the lady bugs are a big big nuisance and will my govt do anything about it... Are you kidding!

Love bugs appear for a week or two every spring and fall. They fly slowly as they are mating and will lank on you as you walk along or get smashed on your car if you are driving. They are somewhat attracted by the auto exhaust.

I think if you are going in Sept., there will be a good chance of running into them
