Louisville in December

Yes, I'm early, but I'm a planner. :)

We are headed to Louisville at the end of December with five and seven year old boys. My sister moved to Prospect this month, and the purpose is to visit her. We do want to take a day trip to Mammoth and visit downtown Louisville. Are there any fun holiday events the week between Christmas and New Years?

Would you recommend staying downtown, or east of the city closer to Prospect? We prefer suite style hotels...and the Marriott brand.

Any great dining options with kids? The boys are great eaters and will eat anything from sushi to pizza to gyros. No fine dining please.

Thank you!

We have three Marriott Hotels in Louisville. One is downtown where you should still find good Christmas decorations. Two are east of town, the Marriott East on Embassy Square and the Courtyard East. Both of these are just off Hurstbourne Parkway. The downtown hotel is nicer, but the other two are closer to Prospect.

Louisville is becoming well known for its food. I suggest that you Google to find what you like best.

One kid friendly local place is W. W. Cousins that has good burgers and a big condiments bar. They make their own buns, and they are fantastic. Also have other items and good cookies and ice cream. It's similar to Fuddrucker's if you are familiar with them.

Thanks for the response. I think we will stay in the Hurstbourne area. I imagine it would be quieter for the kids and parking at the hotel will be free, unlike downtown.

I'll check over at chowhound for some food ideas.

The kids might like Lights Under Louisville.

Kybourbon
That looks cool.

The Hurstbourne area is one big high-traffic strip mall. It is perhaps the least charming part of Louisville. Think Atlanta, Buckhead. You may want to reconsider.

Is the Louisville Slugger plant still open, Carolyn?

DH and I enjoyed the Kentucky Horse Park and Churchill Downs Museum--don't know if the boys are too young or not.

Enjoy your visit.

Yes, according to the newspaper it was sold, but the new owners are keeping it open here. The website is sluggermuseum.com

Be sure and go downtown and experience Christmas at the Galt House.

You don't have the stay there to enjoy the festivities.
