It isn't too far to drive -- if you have the time.

But are you looking for the fastest way? Then flying is the only option really. There are lots of flights to San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose from several airports in Southern California.

But give us more details - how long do you have to travel from LA to SF? Do you want to see anything along the coast between LA and SF?

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but the obvious answer would be to take a plane, if you don't want to do the road trip.

sorry i was'nt more clear i did'nt know if there was a train service i just thought a flight may be little expensive. i was thinking of just spending a day there i didn't want to spend most of the day driving.

I think you have to be clearer as to what you want. There is train service from San Diego to LA. There is train service b/w San Diego and LA and also Amtrak. Here's some Amtrak Info

If you want a taste of A1A, you don't have to drive the whole way. Jet Blue flies between Long Beach (near LA) to Oakland (near San Francisco) inexpensively.

A day trip to San Francisco from San Diego doesn't make a lot of sense unless you fly.

You want to do a day trip from San Diego to SF?? Just doesn't make sense - They are more than 500 miles apart. BTW - flying would most likely be cheaper than the train - but even flying you would have about 7+ hours simply devoted to getting from one city to the other and back w/o counting any sightseeing.

When you factor in getting to/from the airports, advance check in/security and the flights it will take up a BIG portion of the day. Perhaps you should examine a map of CA before you make plans for day trips.
