los angeles to redwood national park overnight stop
 

We are planning a road trip from Los Angeles to Redwood National Park. Is there an overnight stop that is interesting? The best we have come up with is Sonoma area, but that is a 6 1/2 hour drive.

I would stop in either San Francisco, staying in a motel on Lombard Street for budget purposes. From there you can walk over to the Marina, walk the Crissy Field path or go explore the Presidio.

My other choice would be Healdsburg, which is a very cute town with good restaurants and many wine tasting choices either on the square or at the vineyard.

Sonoma/Healdsburg would be the easiest unless you wanted to drive into San Francisco. SF is good of course, but a bit more of a hassle factor w/ the traffic etc. Mostly depends if you want city or country.
