Los Angeles to Minneapolis
Hi all...
just joined and am exploring the site, but wanted to pose this question.
I have to be in the Minneapolis area by June 25 for a family wedding, and will be staying there through July 6 to visit.
I have time to get there and home, probably more on the front end than the back end.
I'd like to take one route there and another back home. I LOVE to take driving trips, and I will be doing this solo, and I have not seen many of the places that map quest directs me through (for example, Zion on western route or Yellowstone or Redwoods on northern).
I also LOVE the west coast area and would not mind driving back (or thru) the west coast and then cut over.
I'm asking a lot here, aren't I?
Sorry! I thought it would be more clear cut and it's really not.
Any ideas appreciated
Michele

You might want to post your question on the Road Trip forum on Trip Advisor. The posters there can help you plan a route and suggest things to see and do.

Your car? In good shape (you and the car)?
It is between 1950 and 2000 miles LA to MPLS.
I would go for 2 or 3 of the Southern Utah National Parks.
Day 1Saturday 6/20) Drive LA to Cedar City UT. Day 2: See Zion and Bryce Canyon OR Arches and Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands
Spend night 2 in Grand Junction Colorado.
Day 3 Make a lunch stop in Glenwood Springs. Take your time and enjoy the Glenwood Canyon on the way through east of Glenwood Springs. Either spend night 3 in Denver or somewhere east of there.
Day 4: The goal is somewhere east of Kearney Nebraska.
Day 5 will get you to Minneapolis with your turn to the north in Des Moines Iowa.
The scenery east of Denver is not as great as the rest of Colorado IMO.
The return trip (Day 1) is Minneapolis to Mitchell SD (see the Corn Palace). Day 2: leaving Mitchell head for the Badlands and Mt. Rushmore. Night 2 in Rapid City SD.
Day 3 Taker the detour to see Devil's Tower on the way to Cody Wyoming. Night 3 in Cody. Day 4 head west into Yellowstone and see all you have time to see. Night 4 in West Yellowstone unless you can score lodging inside the park. Be sure to see Old Faithful.
Day 5: leaving West Yellowstone on US 20 to Idaho Falls and then south on I-15 through SLC and all the way back to Cedar City UT (night 5). Day 6 All the way back to LA unless you have the time for a stop in Las Vegas.
You might want to leave Minneapolis before July 8 to be able to spend more time in Yellowstone.

We have driven from Las Vegas to Mankato Minnesota .drove to Carson City (family there) , few days there visiting Lake Tahoe. Off to Salt Lake City - overnight there, then Grand Tetons and Yellowstone staying a few nights at Jackson, one night at Cody , few nights in Rapid city visiting family, Deawood and mt Rushmore , then on way to Mankato visited Wall Drug - the most boring place I've been to but cited the Wounded Knee information site and museum- fab . A wonderful trip for 2 Americans ans 2 Aussies.
