Los Angeles to Bakersfield: Family Fun
My 4-year-old daughter and I are accompanying my husband on a business trip to Bakersfield in a couple of weeks. We live in Los Angeles.
1. Where should we stay? Is there a hotel from which we can walk to things like shopping or a park? My husband will have the car all day. We'd like as nice a place as possible and the price is not an issue.
2. Aside from 6 Flags theme park, are there any family-friendly places to go to for a couple of hours or for a day in between LA and Bakerfield? If so, we can leave a day earlier is need be.

If it was me and I lived in LA and my husband was on a business trip to Bakersfield AND I wouldn't have a car -- I'd give him a big sloppy goodbye kiss, wave him on his way, and then prepare his favorite meal the day he came back home.
Not really kidding: August + Bakersfield + no car (or even WITH a car) + 4 yo -- NOT my idea of fun.

Best hotels are the Doubletree and Hilton Garden Inn off California Ave. They are not downtown or near anything other than Costco.
There is a nice hotel, was a Holiday Inn Select, but I think it recently change to a Marriott of some sort or a Raddisson. It is walking distance to downtown, next to a nice new Amtrak station. I think there is a park nearby.
But it will be HOT
En route you might also consider the Fort Tejon Historic Park just off I-5 near Frazier Park. In the mountins, not so hot.

It makes my husband so happy when we accompany him on depressing trips that I'd hate to stay home. We go plenty of nice places together so it is no big deal to go somewhere that is not-so-nice (no offense to those who live in Bakerfield).
That said, the Double Tree looks like the place to stay. And I will have a car after all so I think my daughter and I will check out the city's Aquatic Center that appears to have some sort of fun water features.
