I must say that aside from the Big Sur choice, personally I'm not exactly thrilled with any of your choices.

Take Venice Cotel, for example, this is the review from one Hostelworld user:

Have just come back from a trip round the world including Russia, China, Japan, Korea and lots of America. This place was the worst I stayed in.

The "worst" place, including China!!!?? Wow! China and India have some of the raunchiest places to stay for backpackers. This is really saying a lot.

Even a Motel 6 might be a better choice than the Venice Cotel. That's just my two cents.

Besides which, for Big Sur, are you planning to bring camping equipment? Big Sur also has cabins, which might suit your purposes better.

Appears Madonna Inn is your big splurge. It's OK, mostly for honeymooners seeking uniquely designed rooms to stay in. You'll like San Luis Obispo. Take your time and wander the downtown.

I absolutely luv SLO -- great downtown - we visit once or twice a year. Great bars for your age -- college town.. But I think Madonna Inn is a $$ mistake for your budget and age -- if that is your "splurge". It's off the main highway -- no view of the ocean or anything and you would have to drive into downtown where the action is.

My budget place in SLO is Peach Tree Inn. Very friendly, nearer downtown, trolley to take you downtown, breakfast included which will help your budget. I would save the money for food and drinks.
