Los Angeles Hotel/Apt Rental

Spending Thanksgiving week (11/18-25) visiting son who lives in Culver City. He doesn't have space for us at his meager student apt, so we're looking for a place to stay. When we visited in the past we've stayed south of LAX (Hermosa or Torrence) due to hubby's work. No restrictions this time so am looking at Santa Monica/Venice area. We are on a budget and it is a lot of days so I wonder about home rentals. I also found the AIR Venice on Priceline for $112/night. Does anyone know anything about this property or have similar suggestions? We are mid-50's, not night owls, and I'm wondering if noise will be a problem.

Also for you LA folks, are there any iconic LA things that happen that week? Being from New England we only seem to know about the Macy's parade. Would Disney be crowded that week? Our "kids" have never been to either park; we took them to Europe instead!

Extended Stay America - Los Angeles - LAX Airport
6531 S. Sepulveda Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90045

For less than $100/night. Just north of LAX, just south of Culver City.

I like the Inn at Venice Beach, which has just been remodeled. I checked your dates, and the special is $161 for a queen. That includes free wi-fi and a continental breakfast. This hotel is built around an interior courtyard, and I like to ask for a room overlooking the courtyard. Hotel also has parking for about $8/day, I think. It is a couple of blocks from the Venice pier, lots of restaurants, and the boardwalk.

This is a Pacifica Hotel, and we also like their sister property the Jamaica Bay Inn at Marina del Rey, but it is usually more expensive. I checked your dates there, too, for two people, and found a rate of $169. Free wi-fi, but no breakfast voucher, and self-parking is $14/day.

This is a nice place in a great spot for walking to Venice Beach and Marina del Rey. It's worth the extra money, if it's in your budget. It has a nice restaurant for breakfast, etc.

Hi Cindy. On a budget look at the Wilshire Motel which is just outside of Santa Monica bordering a quiet residential neighborhood though it is on busy Wilshire Blvd.(request a unit away from the street). Motel units or small cottages, old fashioned, clean, and you can probably get a good weekly rate. Check youtube as there is a video showing the rooms. It's kinda like a NewEngland motor-court type of place, plenty of casual dining nearby.

Disney will be crowded, Mon or Tues might be less crowded that week but forgettaboudit on Thnks weekend.

"The Hollywood Christmas Parade in downtown Hollywood is always held the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Here's the website, which is usually updated mid October with the current year's information:

http://www.thehollywoodchristmasparade.com/

Come early in the day as the local streets are closed beginning around noon. Grandstand tickets in the television area (red carpet on the street) are available for purchase in advance. This is by far the best way to view the parade."

Unfortunately, we are leaving the Sunday after Thanksgiving! Otherwise that sounds great! We also love craft markets, farmer's markets, etc.

Anyone with thoughts on the AIR Venice apt rental?

Venice is okay I guess, since you're not planning on wandering around after dark. Maybe your son could take a bus ride from Culver City and check out the location of the rental? Does it have several good reviews? It's not an area where I'd take a rental sight-unseen as the neighborhoods run hot and cold, and make certain that it includes parking for your car as parking in the area can be a total nightmare.

Check it out - www.airinvenice.com. It looks wonderful but I understand your concerns.

That apartment hotel looks really nice. It must be newly renovated?

From the pictures, I would rent it myself! Good location near Main St and Abbott Kinney, which have cute little restaurants.

For $112 it is certainly priced right. Parking is a good question.

The reviews look mixed. Nice for the location if you wish to be right at funky Venice-Beach-central. Small as apartments go but a bit larger than an average hotel room. Ikea furnishings and hit-or-miss on cleanliness. Located next to a couple of bars but they tend to close up around 10 or 10:30pm so it quiets down. Parking either a tight-squeeze busy alley behind the property or two long blocks away in a garage.

Call about parking, one review mentioned secure parking.

Have you rented yet? I would not stay on the Venice Beach Boardwalk. It is not safe at night and unsavory during the day. It is not what it used to be. The Century Plaza Hotel is under 200 a night. The Marina Del Rey Hotel is under 140.

There is a Marriott Courtyard in Culver City. Free self-parking. Rate for a king with a sofabed is $127 for the first nights, then $152 for the last 3 nights.

Although I don't have a problem with Venice Beach myself. As I recommended above, I have stayed at the Inn at Venice Beach by myself several times. Being a child of the 70s, the vibe there doesn't scare me.

Not sure I'd want to park a car overnight in an alley, though, in any neighborhood.

Hi peaceout,
I just checked the prices for a queen room at the inn venice beach, the one you recommended it for march 28 th, 3 nights, they really increased the price! More than 250 dols a night!
Is it already high season in LA

Take care

That is Easter weekend, too. And you are booking only one day in advance.

Have you thought of using VRBO? I just checked by Googling VRBO Culver City and this popped up.....http://www.vrbo.com/402033

I have no personal knowledge about this particular place, but wondered if it would be a helpful additional resource. If you scroll down the page on any VRBO listing, they eventually show a calendar of availability.

socialworker Mar 29th, 2013 05:07 AM

Sorry, just noticed that you wanted SM or Venice. The same advice to Google VRBO w/the names of those locales.

yarou Mar 29th, 2013 07:34 AM

you are right PeaceOut!
our mistake bt we only knew last minute when we would finally get to LA!
we found a great one: The Marina del Rey Hotel (in Marina del Rey of course :) )
after cruising Santa Monica, Venice beach for two hours, we ended up in this hotel with very nice view on the sea and pier and with a very nice room for 150 dols, the others were all asking crazy price in the 230 dols because of the easter holidays!

so we are lucky because the price is decent and the location, view abd room are perfect!!
just wanted to share this in case one of you still doesnt have a hotel where to stay during the break or in general!

take care to all of you :)
