Looking for U.S. travel partner
 

Hello! I'm a 64 year old, female, somewhat disabled vet who enjoys travel, but can't afford much due to being on a pension and social security. I like to drive, and recently drove an 86 yo lady friend from Raleigh, NC to Oakhurst, CA and back. We had a delightful time and took our time, and I'd like to do this more. I've driven in Europe and Korea, and have a good record. I love to visit the natural wonders, and occasionally go "first class" (or almost so) with hotels, dining and sightseeing.

Is there someone who'd rather Not do so much of the actual driving, but would enjoy good "road runs"? I'd like to travel further, but for the most part, economics won't allow it. An idea I've had though, would be to do a Trans Canadian trip (similar to the railroad trip). Or even points closer to the Southeast, from Raleigh, NC.

I'm sure this is rather a shot in the dark, but I just want to find ways to make more of this possible for me. Any thoughts?

I think it is a shot in the dark on Fodors, and you'd have better luck trying to network around where you live. There probably are some older women who would like to travel, also, on a road trip and have someone else do the driving. You would know your own city better than others, don't you belong to any kind of clubs, centers or groups, or something like that? Are there any senior centers where you live? They have those in community centers where I live and people aged 50 on up go there, maybe you could post notices on a bulletin board or something. I belong to several book clubs and could network there. What about church?

Try meetup.com great to find local folks with similar interests. Try in nearby cities too. I would be cautious about using Craigslist. Is it Thorntree that single travelers use, from Lonely Planet??

Craigslist should be avoided at all costs.

Don't know about Raleigh, but there's certainly a Senior Center in Cary where you might meet people. I'm 67 and live in Cary and travel, but I really prefer to travel solo. Have you thought about going solo rather than with someone? Would be happy to meet up with you and talk when I get back from my current trip, but am unlikely to be interested in US road trips. No there's old people on Lonely Planet too.

No, she didn't specifically say that, although you might deduce it. But while it is always cheaper to share a room, and gas costs if you.re driving, it is still possible to travel solo on a budget. It helps to pick the places with budget in mind, and be willing to rough it a little in more expensive places.
