Looking for Summer vacation 10-15 hours drive from Minneapolis
We have a little over a week this summer and are looking for places either we have not been or a new place in the same areas within a 15 hour drive.
Two teens, two adults and a dog. We are looking for some hiking, sight seeing and just laid back family time. We've been to Yellowstone/Tetons, Glacier, RMNP, Black Hills, Teddy Roosevelt, Boundary Waters area/Lutsen areas, Door County, Mackinaw Island, Hayward,WI, Brainerd,MN and loved them all.
Would appreciate any ideas.

How about St. Louis, MO ?.. We took our kids there about 5 years ago for a long weekend and we could have used a week easily. Also, Memphis, TN...or both ?
Niagara Falls, Canada..- but I think that is longer than 15 hrs...

Another part of Missouri is the Branson area and Eureka Springs, Arkansas isn't to far from there. Besides all the shows there are many other things to do like bumper boats, go karts and Silver Dollar City are starters. There are many cabins and vacation rentals and houseboats on the lakes.

Go to Voyageurs NP and rent a houseboat for the week to cruise around. Or drive up to Grand Portage and take the ferry over to Isle Royale NP.
Or head north to Canada. Quetico is similar to BWCA, and I'm sure you could find something in the vicinity of Winnipeg.

Thanks everyone.... we have been to Branson and if July were not so hot we would return (we went in October and it was perfect).
The Houseboat idea looks great but EXPENSIVE. I would love to see St. Louis and may consider that but again it's July and a couple in our family don't tolerate heat well which is why we keep heading to the mountains.
May look into more places in Canada but do we need a passport?

I don't know about distances but how about the Wisconsin Dells? About Canada, I don't think you need a passport to enter till 2008. Though I would double check to be sure, and make sure everyone has DMV IDs or drivers licenses.

The Sawtooth Mountains do appeal to me... I don't know much about them though. The drive looks to be about 20 hours but that may be okay.
The Dells is a little over the top for us but I do know there are some beautiful areas around there so will look into this too.
Keep it coming...

How about the area around Missoula, MT? It is gorgeous and I really enjoyed the hiking there as well.
As to the Sawtooths, we loved the area. We found some super restaurants, great hikes, Lewis and Clark connections, ghost towns (Custer, ID) plus rafting. I would recommend either Salmon or Stanley as a base. Since you are travelling with the dog (not a criticism, I have six) I don't think you could stay at Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch where we stayed last summer but you could inquire. I found it one of the best places I have ever visited. Loved that trip and would go again in a minute.

You do need passports for Canada now..
We are going to Alaska in June & July and we were told when we booked last summer that passports would be required when we enter and leave Vancouver.
How about Madeline Island in Lake Superior and Bayfield ? For Father's Day 2001, I surprised my husband with a 4 hour sailing trip around the Apostle Islands, it was around $160 for 2 adults and 2 kids on a 22 ft, 3 masted sailboat. You could stay in Bayfield a few days and go on the island for a few days..

Thanks again -
cmcfong - I have been looking at the Sawtooth Mt. area. If we don't go this year it is a definite future trip as it looks beautiful.
frugal - we go up to the Cable, WI area every year for a week and it's not far from Bayfield (went there last year and just poked around the town). The sailing trip sounds great - where did you find info on that?
