Maybe it's just bad luck but we've tried to take an Island Packers cruise to the Channel Islands twice in winter and both times it was canceled due to weather. Still haven't made it there.

For what it's worth, PS has some pretty interesting hikes into the native palm canyon oasis. We thought it was pretty fascinating- desert all around then you spy these green, palm canyons. There is also the tram up to Mt Jacinto with views and more hiking.

I was about to add that Michelle - we've hiked in PS too.

Fooey - lost another post trying to retreive this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel..._of_California
Anyhow - you might encounter some rough seas in the winter if you are trying to cruise out to the channel isles off Santa Barbara. Years ago - we went on a late summer scuba/spear fishing trip - and it was kicking up a bit - and we didn't get out to Santa Rosa island but took shelter by Anaapa - which was fine as they produced some nice Sheepshead. A few months later - I read out boat - The Peace - had actually sunk!!!! (: Seems the many trips crashing into/over the waves had weakened the hull - and it cracked and they took on too much water - but fortunately - I think all were rescued. |
Yikes! Well, we are from Florida, that's why I don't think its beach weather in Santa Barbara at that time of year! I guess we'll have to see about the Channel Islands and play it by ear.
I would imagine that hiking would be very comfortable then. I think I'll explore the Santa Ynez mountain hikes suggested above. Any other suggestions? |
BTW - have you watched the movie Sideways? Funny movie - good acting - and on their "bachelor trip" - they go to severeal wineries in the Santa Ynez area. I am on a laptop or I would cut and paste it for ye. :)
Think you and the kids would also like Hearst Castle - a couple of hours north - mostly straight shot - from the SY Valley. |
Are there any Segway tours in Santa Barbara? I think the kids would like that.
