Looking for really romantic fall getaway ideas

My husband and I are looking to take off a few days around Oct 19th week for several nights (depending on price), to view some fabulous foliage, do some hiking, exploring, dining and reconnecting/unplugging. (a mix of activities and R&R would be great). Were coming from Westchester, NY (about 45 minutes north of NYC) so we dont want to drive over 5 hours max. Budget- ballpark 200 a night plus food and maybe a spa treatment. Would prefer something highly rated (over 4 stars). We haven't gone away the 2 of us in a while, have really been stressed and want something special.

Were looking for someplace that has a good amount of shopping and activities, maybe some fun fall festivities and such. Not too sleepy so we dont feel isolated, but not too busy either! Also, my husband is a golf lover. Maybe someplace near or on a golf course might do the trick to help convince him ;) Thanks for any tips!

ps- i meant to also tag Vermont, fyi. Were open to anywhere w/in 5 hours or less driving. If its really stellar, and pricing is reasonable (under 200) we might drive a little bit more. Thanks!!

Even Southern NH and VT are probably slightly past "peak" by the 19th...not that it won't be nice but you said "fabulous". Have you considered Williamstown, MA in the Berkshires or perhaps a little closer to you in Litchfield County, CT? I don't know a specific place to stay or things to do but they are both nice areas and the colors should be very good by the 19th.

Litchfield County covers the whole NW corner of CT. You mighty google Lake Waramaug inns or Boulders Inn or New Preston CT inns. Also you might check out Mayflower Inn in Washington CT

Not sure of their current price these days, but the Maple Leaf Inn, Barnard, VT (not far from Woodstock) is wonderfully romantic! We've stayed there in the past (before we finally retiored up here and it is truly "romantic"!

Features included HEATED floors in your luxurious bedroom and bath, and a real fireplace that is always set with real wood and kindling every day! Just open the damper, strike the match at the bottom of the pre-set fire, and enjoy! How's that for romance?

Breakfast was also lovely, of course.
