looking for lightweight luggage with wheels --- any advice on brands?
 

We're doing enough travel that we are going to invest in some new luggage. I'm looking for very lightweight suitcases that have wheels. I have bought the Atlantic Air brand in the past and was happy enough with it, but that line is no longer made. Does anyone have any recommendations? Ideally I'd like bags that weigh under 10 pounds and have a maximum dimension of 54 inches.

I've found that relatively inexpensive luggage, such as that you can buy at JC Pennys or a similar department store work best for me. It's not expensive, so when the outside gets scuffed I don't worry about it, but it's still strong enough to do the job.

I'm Samsonite all the way--rugged stuff for the price, it laughs at scuffs! ;-) There are many different lines of Samsonite, some lighter than others. Sorry I can't be more specific

I can recommend the travel bags that Rick Steves sells on his website. They are extremely durable, very lightweight (8 lbs) and meet carryon guidelines.

We traveled through Europe last June, seven of us, each with one of his packs. We don't have his wheeled bags, though.

I seem to stick with Samsonite & American Tourister ... both have held up well both to abusive handling and over-stuffing. As far as the scuffs go, well, I feel the purpose of luggage is to protect the contents, so to heck with scuffs & scrapes. The bigger the wheels, the easier the rolling.

I agree that inexpensive luggage is the way to go. I was going to get a case at Target but Sav-On Drugs had cases for $25 - which I couldn't pass up. Must have been a "close-out sale"!

I worked in the airline business for many years and traveled a lot. I found there were so many times we had to leave our cases unattended (like unattended outside your hotel room door for pick-up when we were in a large tour group) that having expensive luggage was just asking for trouble!

Veronica - scuffed up cheap luggage is definitely a deterent to theives. Some of the people I travel with for work do things like put duct tape and rope on perfectly good bags to make them look more used and ratty.

I put an old bright scarg on my luggage too, but not because of would-be theives, only to pick my luggage off the carousel fast, and to be sure it's mine. My father once picked somebody's suitecase, good he checked the name on it, so he put it back right away. Since then I mark mine.

We used wide nylon colored straps on our luggage which differentiates it between all th other black large pieces. Recently we have had great luck buying roll on carry on pieces on ebag.com.. great service and great prices..
