Looking for ideas for romantic Christmas weekend getaway.
I want to take my girlfriend away Friday through Sunday, Xmas weekend. We live in Virginia and so I have been targeting Virginia Beach, but am open to suggestions. Ideally someplace where there are some fun things to do in walking distance, or maybe spa-day type of things and good restaurants at night and maybe some like Holiday Lights to see or something. Just looking for suggestions.

While can't answer your specific question - when you decide on a location, make sure there is someplace to eat that is open Sat/Christmas Eve for dinner and Christmas Day. Many, many places are closed. Same for "fun things to do" or spa.

A luxury resort/hotel might be a good option? They usually have good holiday dinners and events and their spas also seem to be open all the time.

Driving?

Would prefer driving distance, yes, but still open to ideas.

How 'bout Cape May, NJ? Congress Hall?

Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA, is a restored luxury hotel with a fabulous restaurant and an amazing Sunday brunch ( be sure to see if it is open on Christmas and reserve right away ). You are blocks from the art scene on Broad Street near Virginia Commonwealth University and the craft beer action in Scott's addition. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is open 365 days a year and would be a great place for Christmas afternoon. It has a terrific collection of fine arts and amazing work in jewelry and craft.
Skip the I-95 traffic by taking Amtrak to Staples Mills station and having Enterprise meet you with a rental car. |
The Jefferson Brunch is booked through the New Year (as is the afternoon tea)....I am not sure if they hold spots for people staying overnight at the hotel but would be worth a call.

Boar's Head Inn, looks like they are doing both brunch and dinner for Christmas.

I'd suggest the Williamsburg Inn, but I doubt that you could get a reservation this late. But if you could, it would be wonderful.

I loved the Inn at Warner Hall in Glouchester. The home is very well appointed, the food was delicious and the setting very romantic for us but not in walking distance of anything. More of a quiet weekend, reading , walking sitting by the fireplace kind of place. Looks like they have special Christmas activities and meals over the Christmas weekend too.
