Looking For Great Thai Restaurant Downtown (NYC) for Tonight!
Looking to take a client to a great Thai restaurant downtown tonight (price not an issue but would like to keep "reasonable")! Last minute notice... What's your favorite? I'm running out of time....
try doing a search on zagat.com
Thanks, a, but the reason I posted here is because I'm looking for personal recommendations and not standard "Zagat fare".
Great thai restaurants downtown? There aren't any, are there?
Haven't been to Pongsri in a long time but the last time I was there it was not all that great... Maybe I should go for a different cuisine but client indicated interest in Thai.. help?
sorry, can only think of uptown or midtown, but i'm topping this for you
Hi Michelle...used to be a very nice place called Danny's on West 46th Street...Mangez Avec-Moi on West Brodway.
What about Holy Basil on 2nd Avenue b/w 9 & 10?
Did you go to the Pongsri on the corner of Bayard and Baxter? Everyone I have ever taken there has loved it. The food is excellent, although the decor leaves much to be desired. This place goes by another name, which is escaping me at the moment, but it's right on the corner.
Lizzie, yes... I think it's Thailand Restaurant or something like that. Last time I was there, the food just wasn't so great. One fish dish that we had was downright horrible and could not be eaten. Thus my reluctance at returning. Thanks, Al. One of my co-workers just suggested Holy Basil. I think I may give them a try.

Thank you all so much for your responses. I really do appreciate it.
Michelle, want to send some Pad Thai over our way? This is getting me hungry!!
How far downtown?

I'd recommend Little Basil Little Basil. Nice atmosphere, really good food with good vegetarian selections also.

39 Greenwich Ave
New York, NY 10014-2751
Phone: (212) 645-8965

Spice is a younger, more hip crowd, but I think the food is also more inconsistent. I have never been to SEA Thai, but have been told it is terrific.

Michelle, I've never eaten at Holy Basil so, even though several people have told me it's good, if it's not -- SORRY!
I don't know abaout "terrific," because I haven't been to enough Thai places to compare, but I can name two that I like:

one at the corner of University Place & 11th Street--actually I cna't name it but it's on the northwest corner, possibly named Lemon Grass, possibly not

Then--Bendix Diner on 2nd Ave on the East side of the Ave, around 10th or 11th or 12th St, you can look it up--all kinds of food including Thai, I like it a lot.

there is also a Bendix Diner in Chelsea, but it might have closed.
Elizabeth, yes there is a Lemongrass at the corner of 11th and University (it's part of a mini chain--6 in total I think). I go there but find it inconsistent. A slicker spot with somewhat more interesting food, IMHO is Spice (as mentioned above) just a block or so down on University and 10th or 9th.
Don't confuse it with "Cafe Spice" on the same block (which is Indian food!)
Thanks, again, one and all!! I'm going to try Holy Basil since I need something a tad "upscale" and the description of the place (citysearch, zagat, colleagues) seems sort of in-line with that. Read good things about SEA Thai as well. I'll have to try them sometime.

I'll let you know how the food was.

What about Toons on Greenwich, just south of Franklin?
