I've been to almost all of the resorts listed above. My company has bi annual sales meetings and we have gone to the Breakers, Boca Raton Resort, Ritz Naples, etc. etc. yawn yawn. La Playa is the best. Breakers is mildewed and old. Boca Raton is horrible. La Playa is number one. Naples, that is.

You have to decide...Do you want tropical, Florida vernacular, glitz, or old world? If old world appeals to you, I recommend The Breakers. In my opinion, there's nothing quite like it this side of the Atlantic. If Florida vernacular appeals to you, Amelia Island should work, and you might consider the Disney Vero Beach Resort where I had a to-die-for brunch one Sunday. For glitz, there's plenty on Miami Beach, although it sounds like all the urban chic would be wasted on you (as that's not what you're after). The west coast or the keys are good for the tropical feel. (And definitely avoid the nouveau riche tackiness of the Boca Resort--ick!)

Little palm is like, 800 a night. so breathtaking and really detoxifying. no tv, no phone.

For un-tacky beauty, with great shopping and restaurants - id pick naples la playa. ritz can be a bit stuffy, but who can tire of hearing "its our pleasure?" not me!

Guy, out of curiousity, how can you call the Boca Raton Resort tacky and for the nouveau riche when it is one of the oldest resorts in Florida while recommending Disney's Vero Beach Resort which is time share?

Just trying to follow your line of thinking.

I've been to The Breakers and LaPlaya and would prefer LaPlaya ... Gulf side much better for beaches. Not much beach at The Breakers ... lots of pool areas, however I also really liked the pool area at LaPlaya. Stay in the beach house ... it's literally right on the beach which you can stroll for quite a ways. Also, I like the town of Naples much better than Palm Beach, for strolling, restaurants and shopping ... very upscale, modern and classy without being too stuffy (which I found Palm Beach to be).

Hi GoTravel. It's a good question. That was just my impression. The Vero Beach Resort, I guess, was bright and shiney and new but also quite pleasant and not pretentious. The Boca Resort may be old, but did not feel at all old to me; it felt very frenetic to me when I was there and also pretentious. It pretends to be in the same league as the Breakers, but there's no comparison for atmosphere and charm.

Another vote for Little Palm Island. Beautiful. Quiet. Relaxing. Wonderful food. Fantastic! Also, love The Breakers. Not so quiet but wonderful food and lovely spa.

I love La Playa in Naples. For more of a city setting, try the Diplomat Resort in Fort Lauderdale. I love this place. Even the city view rooms are spectacular. The pool is amazing. Very relaxing.
