Looking for California Lake Vacation

Our family would like to try a vacation at a great lake in the West. We live in San Diego.
Something we can stay at a lodge on the lake, or a home rental where we can rent water craft, and nice lake beaches. My kids also want a dock to jump off of. Lake Tahoe might be ok, but I understand the water is freezing! Thanks!

how about a houseboat vacation on Lake Shasta- I have friends who do it every year and rave about it.

We've rented a house with a dock on Big Bear Lake. It was in August, and the water wasn't too cold. I'm sure there are some available on Lake Arrowhead as well.

We've camped lakeside at lots of different CA lakes (Casitas, Isabella, Buena Vista, Perris) but most of them are Federal or State recreation areas, with little or no adjacent private property.

We have been wanting to try Bass Lake, ever since driving through there on our way to Yosemite and also reading a Sunset Magazine article about it. The water may be cold there too, but it sounds like it meets your other criteria.

Good Luck! Let us know what you decide.

Does it have to be in California? Lake Powell is a beautiful lake. You can rent houseboats and spent all your time exploring the lake. It's also closer in distance than Shasta and just as far as Lake Tahoe.

If you don't want to rent a house boat, they do rent water craft and there are boat tours on the lake and the 1/2 day float trip on the Colorado River is a lot of fun.

I grew up near Bass Lake; you might enjoy that. You'd be fairly close to Yosemite if you wanted to take a day trip.
