I don't know if money is an object for you, but if it isn't, the Thorncroft Inn in Vineyard Haven, Martha's Vineyard is a wonderful place to spend a few days. Canopy beds, fireplace, jacuzzis, great breakfasts. It's quite expensive, but very romantic.
My wife and I got engaged there on 6/2/95. If you go, try to book room #9, and you can read the journal and look us up.

Here are a few Inns/Hotels in Vermont/NH that are worth looking into:
Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT
Wildflower Inn in Lyndonville, VT
Arlington Inn or West Mountain Inn in Arlington, VT
Mount Washington Hotel at Bretton Woods, NH
Balsams Wilderness in Dixville Notch, NH
All are on the expensive side, but well worth it!!

Don't know your budget, but I'd like to add The Black Point Inn, Prouts Neck, Maine; The Inn by the Sea, Cape Elizabeth, Maine; the Norumbega (spelling?) in Camden, Maine. You should check out the Yankee Magazine website too: www.newengland.com.
