Long weekend fun/romantic getaway in August
 

I'm looking for some good ideas for a nice fun and romantic long weekend away at the end of August. I'd prefer to find somewhere away from the North East - We're from the NYC area, so trying to really get away from it. Possibly the West coast - San Diego, San Fransisco??? Or Somewhere in Florida? I've even thought of Montreal or Quebec City, Canada??? I know this is vague, but I'm just working on ideas for now... any opinions are much appreciated.

In August I would absolutely avoid all parts of Florida - the heat and humidity is too much for me. Then again, the crowds are low and everything is air conditioned. I might be inclined to choose Montreal or Quebec.

But, what I would choose is irrelevant. We really need to know more about you!

What do you mean by romantic? Do you just mean nice restaurants for meals, or does that include all your activities? Any further explanation would be good.

And what do you want do on vacation? Shopping, fine dining, swimming, hiking, art museums, history museums, architecture tours . . .

Certainly your personal tastes will be most important in choosing a destination. :)

Romantic doesn't have to be all activities, but maybe some nice places to eat and at least one place to have a romantic stroll. My bf isn't incredibly interested in museums or hiking/outdoorsy activities; so activites could be site seeing, shopping, and exploring. A city area would be preferable. In June we're going to Turks & Caicos, so if we go away in August I'm not really looking for a relaxing beach-type place.

Ideas huh? Find you a secluded, mountain cabin somewhere. Nothing more romantic and relaxing than sipping your favorite drinks in a soothing hot tub under a blanket of a zillion stars. Priceless.

We spent a great romantic long weekend in quebec city then charlevoix - we flew into Quebec city from NY - spent the day and night at the Chateau Frontenac - Its great - such a fun city - adorable little shops - you can sit and have drinks watching the hustle and bustle on the streets, ot the boardwalk - you really feel like your far far away - then we rented a car and drove to charlevoix - stayed at the Fairmont there - its beautiful - overlooking the St laurence river - Everyone speaks French - the food is delicious - beautiful places to drive to and picnic - we went white water rafting, horseback riding - small casino on the premises if thats your thing - theres a relaix & chateau --
la pinoisserie (?) We may have had the best dinner there of my life! I would definately reccomend this trip - It was quite a surprise how really wonderful it was!

Ok so besides Canada(b/c this is the US forums) what other good ideas are there... I should also mention that this is for a birthday. So maybe Las Vegas? I'd really appreciate some more good ideas.

LV would be fun, no doubt. Romance is a bit more elusive, I think, in Vegas.

Many coastal cities of California qualify as romantic, I think. San Francisco, Carmel, Laguna Beach, the San Diego neighborhood of La Jolla-- any of these could give you laid-back and romantic times. Of course, there are gorgeous places all over the Pacific coast-- Oregon, Washington and British Columbia also have lovely spots to do those "couple" things.

I'm inclined to say that La Jolla would be a great fit, since the Village section has shopping, strolling, great restaurants and some great beach coves to go for sandy walks. Then the rest of San Diego is less than 20 minutes away-- more shopping, good clubs, etc. If you don't need beach but want some pampering, La Costa Resort is up I-5 in Carlsbad.

Ok so I still haven't decided. Back to the East Coast - any suggestions that would follow the same criteria: fun and romantic. We're not very outdoorsy, if that helps. And NYC is in our backyard, so we would probably be avoiding that as well. Thanks.
