Sounds like a nightmare for summer air travel!

It is a huge mess. Management is horrible and it has totally run amok with waste and changes. I don't know the solution but management better get it together. It should be a smooth operation after all these years. Look at Phoenix yesterday when the baggage system went down and no luggage made it on the planes.

Amtrak has a couple options for getting your luggage to over 100 Amtrak stations even if you don't ride the rails yourself.

Will the airlines refund any of the fees they charged for baggage transport? Probably not!
Expect to see a bunch of women in the TSA lines wearing bikinis.

tomfuller, just how much does amtrak pay you?

More than half of my online purchases earn Amtrak Guest Rewards points. I just went over 18K points today which is enough to get me to Galesburg IL from Oregon. I earn at least 50 points per day when I rent a car.
Both legs of my March 2015 trip of over 4400 miles were on AGR points in roomettes.
On my upcoming trip to Alaska, I'll be earning points on the rental car. I will not be riding the Alaska Railroad.
My most recent purchase was a new microwave from Sears @ 3 points/$.

Is it this bad in Europe or just the USA.

On our current trip we started out on a Sunday in Fort Lauderdale which has an enormous number of cruise ship passengers. We were through Security in less than 3 minutes (we are Pre-check);

Left Cicago O'Hare mid-morning this past Thursday and that line was less than five minutes also.

Perhaps this is all because we are Pre-check; in Chicago the "regular" line looked fairly long but it seemed to be moving rather quickly.

I'm kind of glad I'm usually taking Frontier Airlines from our nearby little Trenton (NJ) airport to Ft. Myers. It's about 20 minutes maximum from our house, and with only one flight going out at any time, no checked luggage, and never more than about 10 people in line at TSA (even though there is no PreCheck line), we need to arrive about a half hour before our flight.

JFK has announced to expect even longer security lines than usual (and American is often more than an hour as it is) due to fewer TA agents and way more passengers.

The last time I went through (late winter on Jet Blue but paid a little extra for the faster security, early boarding and more seat room) I passed a couple with the woman and 2 kids crying since they were going to miss their flight. Agent said he could not help them since they had arrived SO late and the people in front (an enourmous line) were already going to have trouble getting their own flights. Don't know what time these people arrived but they were just joining the security line when their plane was leaving in 35 minutes (and they had a TON of luggage).

Let's face it: there are a lot of factors whch affect the time it takes to get through a security checkpoint including the people in front of you and what they do and do not do; the time of day;the size of the airport, etc., etc.
