Most of the majors (Budget, Enterprise, etc etc) have special rates for rentals of 30 to 180 days but they aren't regular 'rentals -- more like a lease and I wouldn't think they'd be available at an airport location.

Right. Look at leases from city locations. Try AutoEurope.

We have always found it less expensive to NOT rent a car right at the airport. Take an Uber to an offsite rental office.

Currently on travel but also have upcoming trip to Chareston and Savannah and seeing some of the highest rental costs of my life, over $500 for 8 days in a tiny car, in line with what I paid in Iceland or Norway.

Renting off-airport not worth the small savings. Maybe travel somewhere else? I’m hitting my 50th state so stuck with these expensive rates. For comparison coming up next week I reserved an 8 day rental on the Big Island for $275.

The OP is not asking about a typical short rental like your 8 day one, but a three month long term rental -- that is not typically something airport locations handle.

That’s true, but I thought the higher costs for a shorter rental might translate to long ones. Breaking up the rental time into pieces might make sense (and would be required for long rentals if using credit card insurance).

Turo is an option for longer rentals but the framework of those owner rentals always gives me pause so never done it. Also the airport pickup costs are high with Turo but could make less financial impact if spread out over 90 days.

You could try Costco or AAA, if member

Have the rules changed???

Do you now have to rent a car for "8 days" in each, in order to mark-off a state?

As for the OP

I can't fathom renting a car from an airport locale for even 3 weeks, let alone 3 months.
