Long Island -- scenic drives/one day getaways
Message: Hello!
My husband and I live in Manhattan and we just bought our first car (after being carless for nearly 5 years!) We want to go exploring this Saturday -- and we were thinking Long Island. Any suggestions for a scenic drive or a fun destination. We'd be up for driving a couple hours, if necessary. All suggestions are welcome -- thanks in advance!! Cindy |
Sorry, only have((o)) for quick list:
South Shore: Ocean Parkway can check out Jones Beach and/or drive on to Oak Beach. East End: Montauk Highway, turn off for Hither Hills State Park and drive on to Montauk Lighthouse or head north in Montauk to Gosman's Dock, check out restaurants, and crazy prices. North Shore: Route 25A (passes some winery's out east) to Orient Point :S- |
The North SHore of LI (scenic route 25A, Cold Spring Harbor, Oyster Bay, etc.) is lovely. It feels like you are no where near the usual congestion of LI. In the area you can visit the Vanderbilt museum and planetarium, also Sagamore Hill. It's a great day or even overnight trip from NYC.

Go to Sayville (South Shore) and see Munchskin Land. I'm not kidding. It really does exist. It's behind the Dowling college (Oakdale). There are many very, very small houses in a small community there.

You can take the LIE to Riverhead for the wine country tours and tastings, (just pick your winery as you pass them) along with Briemere's (sp?) for their well known freshly baked pies and other goodies. The area looks like you're not even the city anymore with farmland as far as the eye can see.
But, considering you want to go THIS Saturday, I would say start early since this is Memorial Day Weekend and there will be loads of traffic heading to the shores of LI. |
It is about 120 miles from the city to Montauk. Hardly a day trip especially on Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend. Under ideal conditions the trip takes about 3 hours. This Saturday it could be 4 hours.
