Long Island NY, winter day trip IDEAS?
Traveling to Long Island New York over the Christmas Holiday and I would like to take a day trip or two. Any suggestions? Any local events to know about?

Looking for Long Island or CT IDEAS. Thanks.
Likes quaint towns, cute shops, history, etc.

Amanda, you might try Olde Beth Page on Long Island which is right off the Long Island Expressway (I think) not sure of the exit.

It is a wonderful restoration, and is always dressed up for the holidays. Lots of history there, and fun.

Have a great time.

Try Cold Spring Harbor, and then continue down 25A to the village of Huntington. Or the village of Stony Brook is nice to. Or, my favorite, Southampton in the winter is lovely. Not crowded, can actually get into a restaurant, and if the weather is warm enought a walk along an unspoiled beach.

Hi Amanda:
How about a look at some of Long Island's lighthouses?
Check out www.eastendlighthouses.org for some ideas.
You can get to CT by ferry from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport or Orient point to New London. I'll search
for telephone numbers for you if you are interested

Sagamore Hill, the home of Teddy Roosevelt, is a wonderful day trip. See http://www.nps.gov/sahi/.

Another favorite place is the Planting Fields Arboretum, http://plantingfields.org/, although the time of year may not be ideal.

Driving out on Jones Beach is also beautiful, any time of year.

Try this general L.I. site:
http://www.go-longisland.com/index.html
It also has a link to Beth Page, which another poster mentioned.

Hope this helps!

Amanda:
I second the Ferry to CT.
www.longislandferry.com for info and reservations. Have fun!
