Long Island City Safe? How about Hotels near Pratt?

I will be traveling on business near Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and am looking for a hotel nearby, that also has good parking options. I will be a female traveling alone, so I am concerned for safety. I stayed at a hotel in LIC before, but it is booked, and am looking at Verve Hotel as it has really good reviews, including that it is a safe area, but I wanted additional input on this area for a female traveler. I will be getting home around 7:30 each night, but will be leaving very early in the morning (4:45-5:00 AM). I called 2 other hotels, and they both had very limited parking which is a concern. Any input and help would be appreciated.

Long Island City is safe at all hours. The hotel is in an area that is well trafficked at all times, as it is near the entrance to the 59th Street Bridge. It largely a commercial area with a few residences on side streets.

Most of Long Island City is desolate but quite safe. There's a growing residential population but still relatively little foot traffic or businesses that are open late. But the street where most of the hotels are is a busy one since it's where several taxi garages lie. The Verve hotel is a bit further away from Queens Plaza than the other nearby hotels, which are mostly on or around Crescent St., but it's equally safe.

The closest hotel that I know of near the Pratt in Brooklyn that has parking is the Marriott in Downtown Brooklyn, which is considerably closer than Long Island City. But it also tends to be egregiously expensive. The Nu hotel in Downtown is cheaper (more like what you'd pay in Long Island City) but would be closer to Pratt than a Long Island City hotel, and it's in a safe area, though very busy. There are many parking garages nearby, including several on Schermerhorn St. But they are, of course, not free and would add to your costs. I don't know if there are any hotels in Fort Green itself. That's a part of the city I don't know very well.

There are areas of LIC, that are iffy. There is a tough housing project and a Riker's Island bus discharges prsioners near Queensboro Plaza most mornings. And as Doug says it can be desolate. Mrs. Adu used to work there and a friend of mine just moved there.

The Queensbridge Houses are not very near that hotel. I maintain that LIC is a pretty safe area, although few could call it charming. Desolate is right on the mark for the general area of the Bridge and hotel. But dangerous? Not to me, in any case.

Although on second thought, there seems to have been recent repeated instances of cars crashing into local businesses on Queens Plaza. Now THAT does sound dangerous. Pedestrians should take extra care!

My DD and SIL live in an industrial area close to the 59th St bridge. They travel by subway at all hours of the day and night and feel safe.

You're far better staying in Brooklyn than Long Island City to be near Pratt. The Super 8 in Park Slope Brooklyn has free parking with an offer on tripadvisor

and is within a walk of lots of good restaurants etc.

The Condor is very close to Pratt. They cater to the orthodox Jews in the area but welcome anyone. They don't have a garage, but there's parking nearby. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev..._New_York.html
