long island
I am one of four irish college students who are going to long island for the summer but we cant decide which part to go to. We have agreed not to go to Queens, Brooklyn, Montauk and Hamptons. We want to go somewhere where we'll get accomadation, jobs, where there are people our own age and things to do. Any suggestions?

A place to stay will be very, very expensive on the island. Hotels are concentrated in a couple of places and not cheap. An apartment just for the summer is not likely as folks don't want to lease them for less than a year. And to college students is next to impossible. Anyone who hires you is doing so illegally unless you have a greencard or are a citizen. My suggestion is to rethink.

DITTO.

and who want to go to Long Island for the summer??? (a former New Yorker)

Try Long Beach. But summer rentals are not cheap.

Unfortunately, I think you picked the 4 places not to go where you could get accommodations and jobs and be around people your own age with plenty of things to do. Why Long Island?

Try Block Island off of Rhode Island. You would take the ferry from Montauk. I worked a summer there in the early 90's and enjoyed it. Fun jobs and lots of young people.

Did you pick Long Island because you want to be close to to the city but you can't afford the price to stay there? I agree with the last poster that you've eliminated all the places you MIGHT find work and an affordable place. This is just my opinion, but Long Island is one of those places that I don't like to visit and thank God I don't live there. It's affluent and safe enough, but it's really crowded unless you have a huge house and a ton of money. I'm not sure what the appeal is for you four...do you already know people there? Have you considered the New Jersey shore? There are some beach towns you MIGHT find something at.

Caroline, I live in nyc and also a college student. If you are in your late teens or early 20's, then u will be bored to death in Long Island! Do consider brooklyn or Queens, acommodation is much cheaper, easier to find jobs and much much easier to commute to the city and enjoy nite life there. Or consider finding a job in the city around NYU area...which is in downtown manhattan in the village....u'll love it there!

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to go to Montauk, but you may want to rethink it. We go to Montauk every summer and there are so many young Irish girls working there (maybe that's why you don't want to go there), but I was talking to a college girl last summer who lived at a hotel with a group of other Irish girls and worked in a restaurant in Montauk. She loved it. I am going against the tide on this post but I love the east end of LI and particularly Montauk!
