Long Beach Aquarium Trip

I have a granddaughter who just adores aquarium, so every summer we go to a different one. This year we flew into LAX, rented a car and drove to Long Beach, checking in early at the Residence Inn just off the I-405 freeway. This Residence In has a full breakfast daily and light dinners Tues., Wed. & Thurs. nights and we were able to get a 2 bedroom, full kitchen penthouse suite for the four of us. During the summer, the Aquarium of the Pacific is open on select nights. from 5 to 8:30 p.m. for $14.95 per person. The shows and Lorikeet Forest are not open but we thoroughly enjoyed the other exhibits. It was not real crowded and the animals were very active. Make sure you get your parking ticket validated for $8 as you go in. By going at night, we avoided field trips.

The next day we went to the Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park where we used our local zoo pass for 50% off. This is a small zoo that is perfect for younger children. There was a short animal show and a carousel and train ride. The food and drinks were very reasonable. We went to Newport Beach for lunch and an afternoon at the beach. This was a day we ran into many field trips but the children were very well behaved. We drove back to our hotel on Highway 1, enjoying the scenery. The dinner tonight was a salad bar.

On our last day we drove to San Pedro, to visit the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium which has displays of Southern California marine life. There is a touch pool they open a few times during the day. The gift shop has a nice selection of items, with a lot of things on sale. The parking is $1/hour. Bring your swimsuits as there is also a nice beach (no waves). There's no food available here but we brought a picnic. The Ports O' Call Marketplace is close with many opportunities for seafood. There are oil wells all around the beach areas with an oil well at the McDonalds we stopped at!

We also used the hotel pool every day. This was a fun, relaxing, educational trip!

Thanks for your review. The Cabrillo Aquarium is an overlooked gem, especially for those on a budget!

My favorite restaurant in San Pedro is Beach City Grill. It was the cafe in the movie "Ten Inch Hero".

Good seafood in San Pedro, try 22nd Street Seafood Bar & Grill, best in San Pedro IMO.
