Lombard st San Fran ?
We are trying to find a hotel under $150 in Sept and was looking for something walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf. There are some on Lombard St and I know it is famous for being steep but havingnever been to SF I do not know if it steep all the way or only in parts.
We like walking but on fairly flat areas. I would like to know if it is steep near the Lombard motels or is it walkable to and from Fisherman's Wharf by non active seniors. Also any suggestions on hotels would be appreciated . |
I suggest Columbus Motor Inn. It is in North Beach area, very easy walk to FW and pretty flat area. Price may be in your range at those dates.

Lombard Street where the motels are is flat (and not attractive - just a wide street - 3 lanes in each direction with a center divider - all commercial). It's very close to two good residential neighborhoods though (Union Street in the Cow Hollow area on one side and Chestnut Street in the Marina - both of which are great for strolling, shopping, eating and people-watching)

As sf73067 says -- there are a LOT of cheap motels on Lombard St. (and some that aren't so cheap but should be)
But that is not the part of Lombard St you've seen in photos w/ the lovely houses, pretty gardens, and cars snaking down the hill. Motel row Lombard St may disappoint you. One good/inexpensive motel on the very end of Lombard St is the Presidio Travelodge (not the other travelodge farther east on Lombard) http://www.travelodgepresidio.com/ |
We liked the Cow Hollow Motor Inn on Lombard St. Clean, good sized rooms, and a short block from Chestnut St. Also, free parking!

Motel row is not attractive (after all, it's "motel row"), but it is not a bad location at all, given it's proximity to Union Street, Chestnut Street, the Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field and Fisherman's Wharf.
The part of Lombard Street to which Janis refers (the iconic curvy part) is rises pretty much straight up after Van Ness Avenue. So if you're looking at a map, the part from the Presidio to Van Ness is flat, then it rises sharply. |
Oh -- to clarify -- by motel row Lombard disappointing -- I meant it won't be those gorgeous homes/views, if that is what they were expecting. For location and/or cheap accommodations it really isn't disappointing.

How far from Van Ness? West of Van Ness all flat, east of Van Ness probably the first block is OK.

Try Priceline for FW, you should be able to get under $150 in September.
