My son is returning to school in Providence, RI by way of Boston Logan Airport. He needs to get to the train station to continue on to Providence. Anyone have any ideas how to go about doing this? He will be traveling on American/American Eagle (it appears to fly into Term. B). Thanks for any help you can provide.

Good news; Boston has a new transport line, called the Silver Line, that operates buses on a dedicated route that goes around all the terminals and straight to South Station, where he can get a private bus (Bonanza, Greyhound) or train (Amtrak, Commuter Rail) to Providence. At the airport terminal, he can just check for the signs for the MBTA Silver Line; IIRC, they're near the stops for the MBTA shuttle bus that goes to the Airport subway station.

Thanks! Do you have any idea the cost and length of travel time from Terminal B to South Station?

Others will know more about the bus, but actual travel time by car from Terminal B to South Station is around 10 minutes, or less, depending on traffic.

There is also a direct bus for $20 from Logan Airport Terminals to Providence, no need to change to a train....they leave at 8:30, 11:30,12:30, 1:30,3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30, 11:30. (I believe that is the time it leaves Terminal A....) check out www.bonanzabus.com (your departure will be Logan Airport, not Boston)

But the Commuter Rail fare from South Station to Prov is just $6.00.

So Anonymous, are you saying he just needs to catch the Silver Line BUS that will take him to the South train station and then catch a TRAIN to Providence?

Yes, that's it.

The Commuter Rail runs a very reduced schedule on weekends, and mght not even go all the way to Providnce, though. You (or your son) can get all the map, fare, and schedule information you need at www.mbta.com.

Hi--I believe that Amtrak also goes to Providence--leaving from South Station, and that will add another option in addition to the commuter rail...

So, to summarize and avoid confusion:

1) Take the SILVER LINE BUS from the Terminal at Logan to SOUTH STATION. This runs on a dedicated right-of-way (a special bus tunnel), so traffic is not really an issue. It takes about 20 minutes and the bus has special racks for luggage.

2) At SOUTH STATION, he can take a "T" Purple Line Commuter Rail to Providence (if running) -or- Amtrak to Providence. Both leave from South Station.

(The code for Boston South Station is BOS, the code for Providence is PVD)

In the future, you may want to look into flights to T.F. Green Airport in Providence. If I recall correctly, you live in/near Dallas. Southwest now flies directly from DFW into Providence.

QC - thanks for the SW info. He usually flies into Providence, but this time Logan worked best (and provides more flight options). I will check into SW for future flight.

Southwest at DFW? Ha, I wouldn't hold my breath for that one. Their partner ATA does fly from DFW, but only to Chicago Midway, where you connect to PVD.

AA has one non-stop daily flight to PVD, but I think they're discontinuing it in March.

For whatever reason, PVD-TX flights really haven't caught on. When I was living in RI 2000-3, both Southwest and Continental have non-stops from Houston. But neither has one now.

This thread has been very helpful for me! I'm planning a trip to Providence next week & I'll be flying to and from Logan Airport. The Silver Line wasn't around the last time I was in Boston but it sounds much more convenient for me.

Just one question: it sounds like the Silver Line stops at all terminals according to what I read here, but from the MBTA website they only list Terminals A & E in their timetable. Does it in fact stop only at those terminals, or did the MBTA just not list the time from the other ones?

The map on www.mbta.com as well as the PDF file show one stop at A, 2 stops at B, one stop at C/D, and one stop at E.

thanks, I must've missed that. I was looking at the timetable, which only listed Terminal A & E.
