Lodging Suggestions for Big Sky in March
 

Hi,

We're contemplating heading to Big Sky to ski for spring break in March. I need suggestions for accomodations that are slope-side and withing walking distance of eating places, etc. We may try to get to Yellowstone for snowmobiling too. Any helpful hints for that excursion?

We were in Big Sky in late March a couple of years ago. The skiing was fabulous, but it was too late in the season to go snowmobiling in Yellowstone. It wasn't that the snow wasn't good, but that it was closed to snowmobile and snowcoach traffic by min-march.

There isn't much of a "village" at the base of the mountain--only a handful of restaurants. There is a shuttle to other areas, and some restaurants have their own shguttles. We stayed at the Huntley, which was very convenient for skiing--but a hotel, not a condo.

We stayed at Lake Condominiums at Big Sky. There are lots of other condos in that area and right on the slopes. I believe I remember that they are Boyne resorts. Will research and let you know what all is right in that area.

Thanks, that would be great. Also, that is good information in the prior post about Yellowstone being closed to snowmobiles/snowcoaches in mid-March. That is one thing that my son really wanted to do. I'll have to research and see if I can find exact dates on when that ends.

The Huntley is nice but older. The Summit is brand new and beautiful: duvets, triple sheeting, walk-in showers, spa, etc.

There are also several condos that you can ski in/ski out of on the mountain. There are condos in Big Sky village which is about a 5 mile drive to the ski area. And there are condos in Hidden Village (about a 3 mile drive to the ski area.

What is the drive like to Yellowstone from Big Sky? What other outdoor activities in Big Sky area in the summertime? Is Bozeman the best place to fly in to? Thanks!

bwg, if memory is working on my side, I would say the drive is 45 mins to 1 hour. Beautiful country.

If you are going to Big Sky, I would say Bozeman is the best place to fly into.

You'll want to fly into Bozeman.

Activities in the summer: rafting, fly-fishing, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, etc.

I went to Big Sky / Moonlight Basin with a ski club group last year. We were there Feb 25 - March 4. Yellowstone was still open then, some of the group went on a snowmobile trip. They had to leave very early in the morning and it cost quite a lot, but they had a great time. We stayed at Saddle Ridge Townhomes at Moonlight Basin. From there, we could ski Moonlight Basin, or take a small shared lift up, then one long run down to get to Big Sky. The condos were very nice and great for ski in/ski out, but not practical for evenings without a car. We didn't have one and it took awhile to get shuttles to go to and from dinner. Bottom line - I would recommend having a car in the Big Sky/Moonlight area. There's not that much at the base of either of the mountains - some of the best restaurants are on the outskirts.
