Lodging near Waikiki
 

My family of 5 will be in Waikiki for 2 days in Feb. I am looking for nice and affordable lodging (preferrably in 1 room) near Waikiki. I am reading that they have a good bus system to get us to the main tourist areas. Is there an area, or specifically hotel, recommendations that are close to the bus system and nicer (a view would be great) and more affordable than in Waikiki itself? I hope this makes sense! Thanks!

Waikiki Joy, Ilima Hotel, HawaiianaHotelatWaikiki and the Breakers are some of the often-mentioned budget hotels that you should check out.

Royal Grove is the most economical I know of, that has some 'character'. The Hawaiiana Hotel is also good but more expensive. Both have websites.

They do not have "views" though (I'm not certain you will find both affordable lodging & a view).

The Bus is good for getting around, $2, and I would definitely stay somewhere right in Waikiki.

Thanks Suze and Tracys2cents. I will check those out. Is there nowhere on either side of Waikiki that has hotels and has easy access to Waikiki?

Waikiki has a wide range of hotels and condos and as far as I know there aren't hotels nearby that will save you money. Hotels are concentrated in Waikiki. The Ohana hotels are the budget branch of Outrigger hotels and you might try looking at those. If you want to save money, you will have to give up the view. Frommer's Hawai'i from $80 a Day (or whatever the $ figure is in the newest edition) might be a good reference to start with.

During our last trip to Hawaii with the kids we stayed at the Ilima. It is about 3 blocks to the beach. We had a 1 bedroom suite with kitchen. This was great for breakfast, snacks and dinner leftovers. We had no view to speak of, but the kitchen was worth giving up the view.

We used the bus only once because it was very unrealiable on times. There'll be plenty for your family to do right there on Waikiki without having to take the bus much esp such you'll only be there 2 days. Have a great time!

Rent a car the entire time.

by the time you pay for shuttles, cabs, buses & tours that you can do on your own, you won't save any $$. Plus you will have spent hours waiting for or on slow public transportation.

With a family of five you ought to think about a condo.

Resortquest Waikiki Sunset has 1 & 2 bedrooms. Resortquest Waikiki Banyon has 1 bedroom. They are next to each other about 1 block form the beach.

I'm not aware of options in the "outskirts" of Waikiki. Possibly there are apartment or condo rentals but for only 2 days, I'm not sure that would be a viable option.

Not sure of your budget but you might want to check out the Hiton Hawaiian Village condos for rent.
With large grups sometimes they are reasoable. You can call HIton Hawaiian Village and tehy will give you a number for teh condo rental or I have seen a website posted here before for condo rentals..can't remeber the cname..other options are make friends with condo timeshares...
