Lodging near Brookline/Brighton Mass
 

Becoming a grandmother for the first time in September and looking for a clean, inexpensive place to stay near my daughter and son in law. Likely will spend the days with the new baby and new Mom, but would like a nearby B&B, or hotel to spend the nights. Will need for 2-3 weeks. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks already.

Congratulations! You will love being a grandparent. My granddaughters are the light of my life. Being Grandpa is wonderful!

Now, to be practical, where do they live?

A few blocks makes a big difference. There is no on-street overnight parking in Brookline, for example, so it is a pain if you have a car. Brighton is full of students, another kind of pain. If you can let me know by area (Coolidge Corner, Washington Square, Longwood, Fuller Street) I can try to help (I am sitting in Coolidge Corner right now).

For that long, I would look at VRBO. If your daughter and son in law are affiliated with a hospital or university, also have them check with the housing office or put an ad in the institutional newspaper for a short term apartment since faculty, medical and otherwise, are always going away for bits and pieces of time.

Do you have a religious affiliation? If so, you might contact a church for your denomination (or a synagague, since Brookline is about 45% Jewish) and ask about renting a room from a member of the congregation.

The two hotels in Brookline are the Courtyard in Coolidge Corner and the Holiday Inn on Beacon, but my guess is that they would be prohibitive for three weeks unless you could negotiate a special deal -- not impossible, perhaps. The Courtyard is more conveniently located, but the Holiday Inn is not bad. Both are on the Green Line, and the Courtyard is only a block from the 66 bus to Harvard Square.

There is a bunch of guest houses along Beacon and a few on Longwood. I keep telling myself that I need to visit some of these so I could give better answers to questions like this. But I haven't done it.

I do know someone who negotiated a long-term rate at the Holiday Inn, but it was some time ago.

There is also a B&B on Washington St. by the Brookline/Boston line. I'm sure you can check reviews of Brookline B&B's to get the name(s).

It'll be more helpful if you can give us a more precise area, as Brookline AND Brighton encompass quite a huge area.

My parents have stayed at a B&B on Longwood and it's one of the cheaper ones. They had no complaints, though that was over 10 years ago. http://longwood-inn.com/

You probably can negotiate a discount for such a long stay. I also recommend checking VRBO for an apt rental.

There's another motel at 1800 Soldier Fields Road; it recently changed its name, I think it is now the Charles River Motel?

For both these places on Soldier Fields Road, you'll need a car to get around.

We are now at the Marriott Courtyard in Brookline. It is quite nice, but expensive for thee weeks.

The Longwood Inn looks nice. We stopped in the other day, as we were walking to Brigham. They do not offer breakfast there, which surprised us. There is a full kitchen with utensils to use, and a dining room. I suggest you contact them about an extended stay price. I know their daily rate was $60/day less than we are paying at the Courtyard, but they had no room for us.
