Lodging at Denali Park Entrance?
 

After seeing this area described as "Glitter Gulch", I was motivated to avoid it. But it looks like we can't avoid spending one night at the park entrance, due to constraints of our itinerary. We will arrive by train and won't have a car, so driving up or down the road to more "Alaskan" cabin-style lodging in Healy, Otto Lake or Carlo Creek isn't an option.

So does anyone have a recommendation as to which of the big fancy lodges we should choose? They all get bad reviews on Tripadvisor, panned as being overpriced and often overbooked as well. But I know that reviews of national park lodging are often overcritical, and I'm hoping that is the case here too. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

We had a similar issue, in that if we wanted to stay near the park entrance we were stuck with those expensive hotels. We picked the Grand Denali Lodge (or AAA picked it for us). It was ok. Overpriced, yes. Way up a hill so you'd wear yourself out walking down to see the river, yes. There was nothing wrong with the room, it was fine but not nearly as fancy as the price. I think I'd suggest something more down by the river itself, less in a gravel parking lot like the one we were in.

So they have a AAA discount? That would help a bit. . . I know Alaska is expensive (I used to live there) but $269 for a motel room is a bit much.

I think there was a AAA discount -- my mother booked the trip through AAA, and she might have had a senior discount also. You should probably just call and check with them.
But yes, that's what I mean by pricey.

There are no good options, sorry. We've stayed at at least five hotels/lodges at the entrance, one in Healy and another about 10 miles south of the entrance area, usually just surfing around for the best rates. We are usually there late Aug - early Sept and can sometimes get great rates at the mega-hotels owned by cruise lines if there are no cruise tours staying there at that time, for example $99 or $119 at the Princess or Grand Denali, but you never see these in high season and we didn't see them in late August last time up either.

Anyway, the one we liked best was the Grand Denali because of the view, second was the Princess, then a couple of non-cruise line oriented ones, I can't remember the exact name(s) but something like 'Denali River Lodge' or 'RiverView Cabins' ... the one we liked the worst was McKinley Chalets, which is owned by a cruise line. That's the only one I wouldn't stay at again.

Too bad you don't have a car, this reduces your options severely. Anyway, just check the rates and look for a 'special' and bite the bullet. There just aren't many high season bargains because their season is so short and demand so high.

That's great information, especially the ranking you gave them. I think our tastes are probably similar, since we both like Camp Denali. I'll remember your advice and avoid the McKinley Chalets.

enzian, if you don't have a car then maybe staying in the cluster of lodges near the highway (Princess, etc) is a better deal than staying at the Grande Denali, which is high up on the hill and isolated. You will have more meal options down below and more things to walk to. If you are only there one day it won't matter much but the longer your stay the more you'll appreciate the convenience of staying near the cluster.

I'm not sure about the shuttle for the GD, I know they will take you to the train station where you can hook up with the Denali shuttle busses but I can't recall how often they went 'down the hill'. We always had wheels ...

We will be there in late Aug but are likely just going to drive up from Anchorage the day we meet the Camp Denial bus and then leave the same day we return from CD a week later, since we have to catch a flight to Katmai not long after. The rates are just out of sight now at the entrance (places that used to have rack rates of $160 a few years ago are over $300 now ... yikes!).
