A few others to try are:
Apple Tree Inn in Fish Camp
Narrow Gauge Inn- Fish Camp
Have you tried any in Oakhurst? There are more accomodations there.

Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal, it has a bus/shuttle connection with the park, and if the hotel is booked, try Expedia, they usually have rooms.

I stayed at Yosemite View Lodge in May and was happy with accomodations
easy drive into park or you can take the bus/ nice restaurant
some of the rooms have a river view

apparently the wawona is available--I take it this would be in the park but about 20-30 minutes from the valley?

anyone stayed there?

Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal is closer and is on a less winding road. It's located right on the Merced River. I would take this over Wawona. Once you pay the $20 entrance fee it's good for 7 days so keep your receipt.

agree with Suzie
Yosemite View Lodge is much easier road into park than driving from Wawona -
its only takes about 10 min and if you dont want to drive you can take the bus
